I blame Pope Clement V and King Philip IV of France.

I could link my local newspaper where the county executive is so proud of herself because they prevented a Mercedes driver from getting welfare when they were caught on video outside of the welfare office. Oh wait, dead horse...

I tried to google it so I could pretend I did but the reality is...no. Apparently I'm slow.
Wikipedia and Dan Brown don't lie.
Records of the superstition are rarely found before the 20th century, when it became extremely common. The connection between the Friday the 13th superstition and the Knights Templar was popularized in the 2003 novel The Da Vinci Code and in the 1989 work "Born in Blood: The Lost Secrets of Freemasonry". On Friday, 13 October 1307, hundreds of the Knights Templar were arrested in France, an action apparently motivated financially and undertaken by the efficient royal bureaucracy to increase the prestige of the crown. Philip IV was the force behind this ruthless move, but it has also tarnished the historical reputation of Clement V. From the very day of Clement V's coronation, the king falsely charged the Templars with heresy, immorality and abuses, and the scruples of the Pope were compromised by a growing sense that the burgeoning French State might not wait for the Church, but would proceed independently. [8] However, experts agree that this is a relatively recent correlation, and most likely a modern-day invention.[5][6][9]

We could, but she is as pure as the driven snow, looks at the world through a raining of rose petals and puppies, and would faint at Roz's bewbs.

Ok, I am pro-choice. Pro-gay marriage. Pretty darn liberal in most aspects.
But I just can't get behind the idea that it's wrong to drug test someone on welfare. People have to take drug tests to work all the time. If they don't pass, they should be required to go through rehab and get help. Who does that hurt?

and... go.
It's been proven that most people on welfare aren't on drugs, at least the people on welfare in Florida.
Also, it's an unecessary cost for people who need the money to survive.
I also don't agree with drug testing at work unless the job involves operating large pieces of equipment, driving, or dealing with sensitive information or goods.
Also - if Microsoft required drug tested, probably half their programming staff would be fired.

lol
I still don't buy it - if you are on drugs, would you take a drug test? I don't think so.
I haven't done a lot of research on it, so I will admit I'm talking without any stats to back it up.
I have been on public assistance, and I think it's great. I would have gladly taken a drug test to receive it, and don't think it's a violation of my rights.
I live in an area that has a very high welfare/section 8/food stamp population. My observation is that way more than 2% of them are on drugs. I would say it's closer to 15-20% around here.
And get this - I also think people should have to volunteer or do some sort of job for the community if they are receiving assistance for an extended period of time.

I still don't buy it - if you are on drugs, would you take a drug test? I don't think so. But for those of them that aren't on drugs, to have your own state think of you as a drug user simply because you need welfare is like kicking a dog when it's down.

I have been on public assistance, and I think it's great. I would have gladly taken a drug test to receive it, and don't think it's a violation of my rights. Bully for you. But people shouldn't have to be treated like criminals if they've done nothing more than ask for help.

And get this - I also think people should have to volunteer or do some sort of job for the community if they are receiving assistance for an extended period of time. This sounds reasonable, but this volunteer work should be limited and there should be free childcare and public transporation vouchers available.

I do see your points, I just also feel like it's reasonable to get tested. It sucks, but so does a lot of things in life.

Exactly.
This was done back in the 30's for young men as the Civilian Conservation Corps. I think they should bring it back in some form. In my mind, giving someone responsibility to do something for the community provides a sense of value and importance, as well as ownership. They can then become mentors to others, and learn job skills.
Sorry. I was off buying nail polish and I think I gave myself a stroke when I heard about Brewer&Co's latest asshattery in Arizona yesterday. Okay, not a stroke but I did tell my husband I wished Obama would've punched her, which, as I'm mostly a pacifist, was really out of line. But. . . I mean. . . WHATISWRONGWITHTHATGOVERNORANDHERILK??!?!!?
I'm locked in an office away from a computer screening applications for our new English professor. This is my one break to eat a Lean Cuisine in front of my computer. (But your title is proof that you know how to make me click on something :-)
1. I took off work early today.
2. They are trucking making me work at work these days. I miss out on ALL the fun.

Damned near every tech support employee (of non-Asian descent) would be fired. Yes, that may be a racist stereo type, but unfortunately at my work, it's also true, with the exception of the 40 something (badly) bleached blonde who still dresses like a 1980s biker chick who is also anti-pot.
