Did anyone see last week's episode of Bones? (I watched on Hulu last night, hence it's already a week old...) Bones and Booth spent the whole epsiode arguing about where their baby should be born. He wanted her to give birth in a hospital, and she wanted to give birth with a midwife at home. They had a lot of conversations about the pros and cons of each option. She ended up giving birth in a barn, and only the 2 of them where there. She was calm and they were having a conversation between contractions, but it did show her as screaming while pushing. It was a very natural setting, though, and she was happy and fine right after she "gave birth." It was a very peaceful scene and not what I have seen from other TV births.
The really interesting part to me, though, was one of the "after show" type clips they had about Emily Deschanel talking about her real-life birth experience of her son. Someone commented that the experience was probably similar, implying that it was out-of-hospital and med-free. She disagreed, and explained that Bones gave birth in an unfamiliar place, unassisted, and was shown vocalizing. She gave birth at home with a midwife, and used hypnobirthing so she was very quiet most of the time. She thought the 2 situations were opposite each other, where I see them as similar experiences. I think it's great that she was talking so openly about her real natural birth experience, and in a very positive way.

I think the two birth experiences seem very different because having a baby in a barn with your husband and no one else would be much more stressful than at home with an experienced midwife.
I've never given birth in a barn, but my husband delivered DD2 and it was unplanned and it was stressful and frightening. Yes we talked between contractions and we appeared calm; the ambulance officer who arrived as baby was head out said I made it look easy. Really, though, I was like a duck. Calm on the surface but my feet going like crazy under the water.
I can see similarities in terms of it being pain med and intervention free.
