Question for Friend re: 5% Morph

Hi all! My friend's husband has a count of 29 million, 50-60% motility and 5% morph. My husband's numbers never even approached those numbers (800K count, 10% motility and 0% morph), so I don't even know what her approach should be. Obviously, she should be listening to her RE on what her next steps are, but if you had similar MFI numbers and no other apparent issues, what did your RE recommend?

I know that the threshold on morph was lowered last year or so in terms of what is "normal", but I guess I'm asking if the 5% number would mean she should be looking at an IUI?

Thanks!

Re: Question for Friend re: 5% Morph

  • That's pretty similar to what DH and I had. We were recommended to do IUI's...but they didn't work so who knows. I'd definitely start with IUI with those numbers though if there are no other known or suspected issues.

    Good Luck!

  • With those number I would def. try IUI first before moving to IVF.

Morph can vary greatly from sample to sample and my RE said anything over 4% is pretty good.

I know, right? DH has always had 0% morph, and every once in awhile, they'd put 1%, and I'd get so excited. At our third IVF, his count had dropped to 20,000, and they had difficulty finding ANY normal ones from DH. We had been on the fence about going 100% DS vs. half and half for fertilization. It's mind boggling to think about the numbers. I believe they had retrieved 14 eggs that cycle, so it's hard to imagine that even out of 20,000, they couldn't find 7 normal ones. Once we heard the dismal news on his sample, we knew it was a clear sign to go with 100% DS for that cycle. So, whenever I hear anyone say they have 4% or 5% morph, or even a reliable 1% morph, I foam at the mouth with jealousy. Ha!

My dh has 0% morph too, but is opposed to DS.... I wish I could convice him being a father has more to do than bio connection.  We just met with a new uro on Monday who is supposed to be the top MFI guy in the area, so I'm hoping he can recommend something to get DH's SA to improve.  But we did get pregnant on ivf #3, so we keep hoping it will work again.

  • Those numbers are awesome compared to my dh...I'd think an re would suggest Iui too. My Ob would likely say they can prob get preg naturally but to give it 2 yrs not 1.  But I understand not wanting to spend 2 yrs w TI. YUCK.
