Natural Birth

My hospital water birth story- super quick labor! (PIP and long!) (XP)

On Wednesday morning I woke up to losing lots of my mucus plug and bloody show. I had an OB appointment scheduled already at 9:30am for an ultrasound with fluid level check. I was just having a standard check on it because I was  near my due date, so my doctor wanted a baseline to compare to if I go over due. The minimum they wanted was a 9, but I was at a 3. I was sent to L&D but my doctor knew I wanted to avoid an induction so she stuck me on IVs at 11am to see if she could just pump me full and raise it up, like maybe I was dehydrated. I wasn't optimistic this would work because I drink 120ish ounces of water every day, so I knew I was not just dehydrated.

I felt like I would end up being induced so I wanted to do whatever I could to get things moving, but I was frustrated because I was hooked up to all the monitors and IV and didn't have much mobility. I rocked in the rocking chair and did some nipple stimulation for a few hours. I had very light contractions off and on but they were not the least bit painful or consistent. After being on IVs all afternoon, I had another ultrasound at 6:45pm and I peed right before. I thought my water broke might have broken at this point because when I sat down in the bed after using the bathroom, I felt like I had a gush of fluid. I mentioned it to the nurse but she said it was probably just more of my bloody show (I'd been bleeding/spotting all afternoon). (However later when I got up we discovered there was indeed a puddle on the bed).

The ultrasound was over at 730 and she told me we would need to wait for doctor to start a plan because my fluid didn't go up. I started growing impatient waiting for my doctor because I had so much anxiety about induction and just wanted her to get there and make a plan. I started to walk the halls really quickly because I was so anxious. About 9:30pm I started to have some contractions that were uncomfortable but I could walk and talk through them just fine and kept walking the hall.

My doctor finally showed up and checked me at 10:30pm for the first time and I was at a 2. I was determined to not be in active labor because of this (they wanted me to be at least a 4 to avoid induction). I was moved from the observation room to the natural birth/tub room and asked to take a shower to relax and get comfortable before we got things moving with the induction. They did not think I was "in labor" so they let me get in the shower at 11pm.

While in the shower, within minutes I started having to moan loudly through contractions. I called for my husband to come wash my hair for me because I felt like it would be relaxing. I started to get stronger contractions and he used the shower head on my back and belly. I could no longer talk through contractions. I kept leaving the shower to use the bathroom because I was having "I need to poop" feelings.

After about 15 minutes, the nurse wanted me to get out to sit on the monitors and get things started. I went and got in the bed and let her hook me up, but I hated being seated or sitting still. I wanted in the tub so badly because I loved the shower but she said I had to be at 4 to get in there. I could tell she was getting annoyed with me because it'd been such a short period of time and I was already being so "difficult".

I kept telling her I could not sit there and insisting I had to poop. She told me I was just feeling pressure from the baby but I told her she was wrong and she let me go to the bathroom. I did indeed poop and did not want to get off the toilet, but she made me come back to the monitor because I only stayed on for 2 minutes the first time. I asked her, "Do y'all have AC in this place?!" and started taking off my clothes (I was only wearing a skirt and sports bra) because I was so hot. She said, "Of course we have air conditioning, but I will get you a fan." LOL. Having the fan there, I was able to get through two contractions on the monitor.

I started to start thinking I couldn't do this naturally and asked to give up around 11:30pm. My husband and doula kept reassuring me. I just thought to myself they must think I am so weak that I am already saying this.

At this time, I tried to rip the monitor off and screamed "I HAVE TO POOP!" The nurse just let me go and left the room, to go get my doctor to calm me down. I sat on the toilet and instead of pooping, my body started to push. It was completely involuntary. I was holding on to the toilet to try and push down to poop, but my body was raising up on its own and you could see my belly pushing. My husband started freaking and yelling for the doctor. I just kept yelling, "He's coming! He's coming!"

I had two contractions on the toilet (about a minute apart) and they got me to the bed, checked me at 11:45pm and I was complete. They filled the tub up fast. I got in and started pushing on hands and knees at 12:15am. I remember asking what time it was because I wanted to know if it was the 12th yet because my husband thought he would be born on the 12th. I did hands and knees for a bit and wasn't making much progress or very comfortable. The doctor suggested I move to sit down reclined against the side of the tub and put my feet in these pedal type things. I pushed like this, holding on to side handles for what seemed like forever but I reached down and brought him up to my chest at 1:04am. (I screamed like a maniac through every push by the way and the ring of fire lasted for what seemed like forever because I got his head out quickly but was having trouble getting more than just the tip of his head out.)

He started crying immediately then just sat there looking around and pooped on me. We let the cord stop pulsing, my husband cut it and the placenta came out just 10 minutes after he was born. We moved to the bed and he started feeding. We are both doing great. I had a tiny tear that didn't need stitching. We will hopefully be released to go home in a few hours!

I am so glad now that I wasn't at home when things started because I would have refused to come to the hospital after less than two hours of "painful" contractions, thinking I was weak I know I would be stubborn and want to stay home longer... And this kid would've been born who knows where!

Here he is about 2 hours after birth right before we transferred to recovery:

  • Thank you everyone!

It is so true what I learned in all of my natural birth "studies" about the importance of being comfortable in your "birthing environment". I was so anxious all evening long waiting for the doctor and about facing an induction, that I was in labor and didn't even know it because I was not relaxed enough to let my body do its thing. Once I got to the water birth room at the hospital and in that shower away from the machines and nurses, it was all downhill. SO amazing how our bodies work!

  • Also, something I think helped me progress a lot was touch/kissing/nipple stimulation from my husband. I remember reading so much in "Spiritual Midwifery" (by Ina May) about kissing and intimacy with your partner helping during labor. I was skeptical (honestly thinking it was just "hippie talk", lol) but it was so effective for me! I asked him to come in the bathroom and talk to me while I showered to calm me down and center me before what I thought would be a long night ahead with pitocin. After a few minutes, I asked him to just get in with me. He washed my hair and kissed me and manually stimulated my nipples a bit (to help naturally induce). By the end of the shower (which seemed like an hour but was only about 15 minutes) I was close to transition.
