Drying up

We switched to formula because I couldn't produce enough milk to keep up with the baby. Now, 2 weeks later (no nursing or pumping) all of a sudden lefty starts leaking! I never got engorged after we stopped nursing, but apparently I've got some juice left! How long does it take to fully dry up?

Re: Drying up

  • Did you wean him off the breast milk? That'll affect how long it takes for your milk to dry up (or so this site says).

  • I had been supplementing nursing with frozen reserves that I had for about 2 weeks, then at my son's 2 month appt I asked the doctor for formula recommendations. I started formula that day and used frozen breast milk for about every other feeding to finish off the supply that I had. I think I pumped one more time, and haven't nursed or pumped since. Thanks for the link to that article! I guess it could be a little while still, I won't throw out those nursing pads just yet :)
  • It can takes months (even a year) to dry up... So keep a few nursing pads around just in case :)

  • I dried up in a few days, but I was only producing like 2 oz. a day.
