I would like to know if they are BF or formula feeding. I would think it is easier to overfeed a kid with a bottle than on the breast. This is due to the mechanics of a bottle-nipple in that it drips, causing kid to suck, causing more liquid to come out, etc. So people are led to believe their kid is starving and needs more food, when if they just stopped, they'd see that their LO was full and didn't need more food.
So yesterday while we were out, and about and about a month ago when DD was getting her pictures taken, DH and I saw babies that were VERY big. I chatted casually with one parent while we were waiting for our pictures and he said his baby was 9 months old, and DH and I estimated about 50-60 lbs. We saw another baby about the same age, but maybe about 40-50 lbs. at Carter's.
DH and I were wondering whether this is just due to over-feeding or if babies that big typically have some sort of metabolism or hormone issue? I'm really not trying to be snarky or offensive, I was honestly just curious.
Either your estimations are WAY off, or you should have called child protective services. Seven year old kids are 50 pounds, not 9 month old babies. Even the top percentile of babies that age is about 25 pounds.

Yep. For perspective-I just carried in a 40 lb. bag of dog food and almost died. Yes, I'm weak, but still, that's a lot.

Well it can be possible for kids to be that big. I have a brother that was 40+ pounds at a year. He was breastfed. There was nothing wrong with him. In fact he's still just a big boy. People are all different.
I would not say that he was overfed or had a problem. I'm going to say that all people are different and I think it matters more what happens as adults that matter.
Not sure on this one...I have a friend that BF her 10 month old and he is HUGE! Not 40 lbs huge, but is def a chunk. Still adorable!! :-) Could be hereditary too. Some babies are just huge chunkers until they start crawling/walking and burning off some of the pudge.

The 9mo was not 50-60lbs. Just sayin'. DS1 is 50lbs and is off the charts for his age.
DS1 has always been a big kid. He was EBF and pedi always said he had the biggest thighs he'd ever seen. He was tipping the charts even as an infant, on breastmilk only. Overfeeding? no. I guess I just produce half-and-half instead of 2% milk.
At that age, it's most likely nothing more than just the way they are. DS1 hit a crazy growth spurt between18-24mo that sparked some concerns. They did blood draws, checked hormones, even had to do an MRI. Nothing.
Please stop judging bigger babies (and their parents).
Sadly I don't think I was that far off.. That's why I was wondering! I have never seen a baby that big in my life. I thought he was like a chubby five year old at first but saw he had diapers on. (the one we saw at the photo place) that's why I was asking about genetic issues or medical problems. I know an overactive petuitary gland can make someone grow immensely fast height wise but wasnt sure about weight issues.
I don't get how you confused a 9mo with a 5yo. Besides the size thing, the difference in motor and verbal skills can't even be compared. Having misjudged the age by such a huge amount, I imagine you misjudged his weight just a lil bit too.
Re: I hope this isn't offensive, just curious...
Note: I am FF+supplementing w/ BM

Also, everyone loves a pudgy baby.

I don't. I think of his future and how he will have a tough time growing up if overweight and fat.
I really hope your daughter doesn't grow up to embrace your shallow, distorted views of her body.

So if your daughter gets chubby, you won't love her? What a good mom.
