Natural Birth

AROM

While discussing my upcoming birth with my OB, we talked about under what circumstances I would consent to having my water broken.  I was surprised to hear that if my water hasn't broken by the time I'm ready to push, the OB will want to break it at that point.  Her explanation was that they like to make sure there's no meconium in the amniotic fluid, and that if there is, they're prepared to deal with that situation as soon as the baby is born.  I've never heard of this before, does anyone have any experience with this situation?  I was surprised, since I've heard positive birth stories from women who gave birth with their waters never breaking.

Re: AROM

  • My water never broke and I'm glad I didn't let them break it. Chances are very low that this will even be something you have to consider, as "en caul" births are rare. However, they can deal with a meconium issue just fine, even if they have to break the sac of a fully born baby. I wouldn't let them pressure you into it if it's not something you're comfortable with.

  • I've never heard of this, I delivered at a hospital and pushed with my bag of water still intact.  As I was pushing they could see the bag of water which would swell with each push and my DH and MIL said it was clearish/whitish, so I would imagine they would have been able to determine whether there was maconium based on the color.  Before I started pushing I asked my MW the advantage to breaking the bag of water before I started pushing and she said the only advantage is that she wouldn't get sprayed in the face :) Although my MW did break my bag of water about three pushes before DD was born and she said that some people theorize that keeping it intact keeps the lungs from fully clearing, but she said other people say that's not true.  As pp said it's rare that a bag of water will stay intact for that long so it probably won't even be an issue.  I will say though that I think it gave me much more control as I was pushing because I never felt that overwhelming urge to push that so many women talk about.

Mine broke about 30 minutes before I delivered. But other than that, exactly this ^

Babies have meconium all the time, it's not that uncommon. A little gross when you think about it.

  • with my daughter they broke my bag of water right before I delivered, it was delightful because the rush of water helped relieve pressure and moisturize the vajay jay :-)

with my son the broke my bag of water an hour before I delivered to help speed up the delivery (I was only dilated to a 4 but having 2 minute apart contractions from the beginning)  this sucked, becuase he was a fast and dry birth which was burn-y.  Never do something you are uncomfortable with, your doc shouldn't pressure you.

This is what I've heard too, though don't know how much truth there is to it. But like PPs have said, it's very rare for babies to be born without the water breaking, so it'll likely not be an issue.

  • I, personally, would not consent to this. If a baby is born in the sac, it is a rare and amazing thing and the body may very well have a reason for doing it. Also, AROM can (very slightly) increase the chance of a proloaped cord. Complications from meconium are quite rare, so I would err on the side of letting nature do what it wants to do on this issue.
