I have been dairy free for 4 months, and am now going to cut out soy from my diet. My EBF LO has eczema, wakes every 1-2 hours at night screaming, and is not gaining weight steadily. I'm looking into seeing an allergist as well.
When I cut out soy, do I need to cut out soybean oil as well? I see a lot of conflicting opinions. Any other advice is welcome.
TIA
Re: Breastfeeding/allergy question
I know in a lot of cases, the oil is okay. Even supposedly peanut oil is fine with a peanut allergy, but I wouldn't chance it.
If it were me, I would cut out soybean oil as well at first, and then after symptoms go away, try adding it back in.
It ended up being easier for me to do a full elimination diet (there are different ways...I avoided Top 8, sesame, onion, garlic, tomato....and something else) for a month and then slowly add stuff back in. I was so aware of what I was eating and eating such limited foods at that point that it was easy to figure out my LO was also reacting to pineapple.
I am not at all saying it is easy to do an elimination diet, but I found out what was causing our problems a lot faster than eliminating one at a time.
I agree with PP...I would cut it all out, so you both can get some rest and later on, try adding it in slowly to see what happens. Some say that the oils are heated to a point that the allergen part no longer exists, but I dont have any first hand experience since i avoid peanut oil still with DS1, because I just dont want to risk it.
Also like PP said, random foods that you wouldnt really think about could also be a problem-like my DS2 gets hives from peas. Of course the top 8 (dairy, egg, wheat, tree nuts, peanuts, fish, shellfish, soy), also citrus and seedy berries, sesame seeds or any seed really. GL to you and hang in there!!!

Sorry you're having such a rough time! Has your LO always woke up every 1-2 hours? Just curious if I'm in for that later on down the road...
Most people say that you don't need to be concerned about soybean oil. I think it's fine. I didn't do the TED (total elimination diet) because my milk supply would tank and I have trouble keeping enough weight on while breastfeeding. I was very careful about keeping track of the "top 8" when I'd eat any of them. I'm pretty sure I've pinpointed some allergies/intolerances to milk, soy, egg, nut, and wheat. I also notice her diapers are terrible after I eat oatmeal (which is not in the top 8). You could try recording everything you eat and watch to see how she reacts. If you notice any trends, take certain foods out.
Also, you can try giving your LO probiotics (healthy bacteria that fight the bad bacteria in the intestines). My DD's stools got MUCH better after we started giving her probiotics. But be careful...a lot of them contain soy. We order ours from Klaire Labs and they are soy free.
Hope that helps!
PS- I love your DD's name. Our oldest is Halle
