Baby Names

using family names..... help?!

so, i know it's early.... but we already have our boy name from my last pregnancy with DD. (family names)  We've been going back and forth on girl names, and tenetively settled on Madeline as a possibility. But we want to honor both our mothers too, but i can't figure out how to encompass both of their names, since they have the same ending.

Madeline Cindy Wendy is what we'd end up with. and i don't know about the flow... i have alot of other names i love for the middle name, but i sort of like the family ties with these names. thoughts?

here's the list of names we like for other choices:

Marian, Claire, Cecilia, Eleanor, Lillian, Cassandra, Lily.

thanks for your help!

Re: using family names..... help?!

  • Madeline Cindy Wendy is not a good flow.

I'd choose only 1 middle name and keep it simple whether it's a family name or not.

  • yeah that's how i feel, but i don't know how to choose one mother over the other. i feel like if we use a family name we have to do both or neither because one will have hurt feelings.... that's why i'm torn on what to do. thanks for the validation on my gut feeling that it doesn't flow right tho i appreciate it!
  • I'm all for big names if they flow well but Madeline Cindy Wendy doesn't. :( I wouldn't try to honor both mothers in one name. If both are super sensitive and would create drama I would just choose not to honor either. We honored my family with DD 's name...maybe you can take turns? I again don't like Cindy or Wendy as mns but family significance could trump flow. Although, I prefer Madeline Claire.

This for sure. Cindy Wendy is not good at all.

  • Could you maybe use their middle names? ____ Cindy Wendy doesn't flow well at all....

(my favorite it Madeline Claire too!)

  • Too long winded...sorry. It doesnt have a nice flow to it at all.

  • I definitely wouldn't force this! If you don't want to honor one without the other, than I say don't honor either.

I was reading that Carter's thread on FB the other day (on why people gave their children certain names), and had a revelation: sometimes family significance is just *not* enough to make a great name for the next generation! Don't saddle your child with a bad name just for "meaning" or family reasons.

    Edited: for clarity!

The answer is obvious, isn't it? You have to mix Wendy and Cindy together and call her 'Windy'!

    Stick out tongue

In all seriousness though- is Wendy short for anything, something that might give you a little more flexibility? Because Wendy and Cindy together does flow kind of awkwardly. I agree with a PP that, if you can't make it work for both, just don't use either. Family politics can be so tricky. Wink

Ha ha. And I was going to suggest combining the names to make Cendy! (Not even sure how to pronounce that because now it makes me think of candy. lol)

Is Cindy a nn for Cynthia?
