Natural Birth

intro & WWYD

Hi ladies, we just found out we are due in december and couldn't be happier!!!

I had to have a csection with DD at the hospital, and i really felt robbed of the birthing experience, so I've found a birthing center that will allow me to VBAC, but they said they don't need to see me until 10-12 weeks, so i made an appointment for week 12 so we could hear LOs heartbeat.  With my DD i'd already had a few appointments and an ultrasound by that point.

thoughts? is this just the difference between hospitals/doctors & birthing centers/midwives?

I am REALLY excited to be having a VBAC at a birthing center with the posibility of a water birth.  I'm just wondering if this is normal for them, or if i should change my appt to earlier.(they pretty much left it up to me, but i only get 14 appts for the entire pregnancy, so i maybe want to save them for later on)  thanks for your help!

Re: intro & WWYD

  • I am using a regular OB office, and the normal 1st appt was at 12 weeks. However, I had some bleeding around 8 weeks, so I went in then for an ultrasound to make sure everything was okay.

My advice is wait until 12 weeks for your scheduled appt, but don't hesitate to call them before if you have any concerns.

    Congratulations!!!

  • It seems pretty common for some OBs (not sure about MWs) to not want to see patients until after you've missed two periods. It's possible that because it's a birthing center, they're a bit more "hands-off."

  • thank you! i agree, i will keep my appt for 12 weeks, i'm just SO EXCITED.
  • I have a MW and my first appt was 12 weeks but like pp said it's ok to call if you have concerns before then, the first trimester is pretty uneventful anyways so there's not much they have to check until 12 weeks :)

  • 12 weeks might be a little late for an ave first appt, but that does not seem too late for a first appt. I know I ended up going in much earlier than they original planned because I had some spotting. So if things seem to be going well i would keep the appt as is. I would call if you have concerns though.

  • All the offices I've gone to had me go in between 6-10 weeks and that was just an intake appt. with a nurse. Then I would go back around 10-12w for my first physical appt./exam/blood draw. I don't think 10-12w is too crazy for a first appt. and wouldn't worry about it.

  • My first appointment was at 12 weeks. I wouldn't stress about it :)

  • thanks gals! i feel better about not having an appointment for awhile.  i will definately call if i have concerns.  i appreciate it!
  • Yep, I've had 2 LOs under MW care (including this one) and 1 under OB care, and my first appts with all 3 were between 10 and 12 weeks. I didn't even hear the HB with this one until 14 weeks. And only ever had the 20 week u/s (no early/dating u/s).

  • There is really no reason to see you before 12 weeks (when they are more likely to be able to hear the HB via doppler).  I didn't see my MW for the first time until 13 weeks.

  • My "maternity care" didn't start until I was 12 weeks with both of my viable pregnancies.  I did go in for ultrasounds almost once a week prior to that due to prior medical/pregnancy issues but I think the standard is toward the end of your 1st trimest since they can't tell much before then.

  • In the UK they routinely won't do a first appointment until 13 weeks. I'd say you're fine.  Congratulations!
