Anyone done any air travel yet?

I flew a few times during my last pregnancy, but I think that I was past the point of morning sickness and nausea. I'm flying next week and I'm hoping that the flight won't make me feel worse. Anyone flown recently and how did you do with feeling sick? I'm also considering opting out of the full-body scan, but perhaps that might be a bit neurotic of me. Although I'm flying with my toddlers, so perhaps I'll get exempt from it anyway since they won't send kids through it... Hmmm...

  • How do you opt out of the x-ray?  Just ask?  Do they then dig through all of your stuff?  I am flying at 16 weeks.

  • I flew a few weeks ago. I opted out of the x-ray back scatter thing and got a full pat down.

It was ok. My doctor told me to walk around the plane every hour at least to make sure I avoid getting any kind of blood clots in my legs, not that she had to warn me. I had to go pee every hour anyway.

I specifically requested a seat on the aisle, not too far from the bathrooms, but also not too close, as the smell would make me want to throw up.

  • Crazy!  I had no idea you could opt out.  I flew at 6 weeks and would have considered it.  Not because I think anything bad WOULD happen but why not.

  • I flew when I was 7 wks and m/s was in full swing. It wasn't great. Now that I'm farther along I think I would be fine if I flew again. I hope the flight doesn't make you feel worse!

  • I flew at 11 weeks.  I wasn't very sick,  we had a very bumpy landing that made me feel not well but other then that was okay.  I opted out of the scanner.  I just asked and told them I was pg and nervous and I didn't get a chance to ask my doc first.  They ladies (younger early 20's) before told me I would be fine but it was my choice.  The lady who pat me down (older 40's/50's)  said she totally understood and would get patted down as well.  Everybody was really nice took about an extra 5 min.

However, when I travel with DS they never scan we go in the family line so I would assume with toddlers you would be automatically pulled out.

  • I traveled at 9 weeks and then I will travel again at 26 weeks. I'm a little nervous about the second one, but my OB swears it will be fine. She said she flew at 32 weeks. She's pretty wild.

  • I flew at 8 weeks and 10 weeks. I had asked my Dr about the scanners and she said they were fine. I was still kind of thinking about opting out. I didn't have to do them on one flight, but coming out of DC they were really mean so I was afraid to opt out. I will be flying again at 22 weeks and at 24 weeks. I am nervous about the 24 week trip as it is to Alaska-the second leg is a 7+ Hr flight for me. And I am nervous about the scanners since I will be farther along, but maybe I won't feel so afraid to opt out since I'll be obviously pg.

  • I flew last week when I was 12 weeks.  I was fine on the plane, just get up and walk around and have some water with you in case you start to feel sick.  I did throw up after our return flight be we had a VERY ROUGH landing in Chicago due to 25 mph winds.  Other than that it was fine.  Also, I did go through the body scanner both on the way to Florida and on the way home and had a doctor appointment and ultrasound yesterday and baby looks fine. My doctor told me before I went that it was fine.
  • I'm flying next week too.  My morning sickness is still going strong, I was really hoping it would settle down by now so I could enjoy the trip.  I guess we'll see how it goes.  Good luck!  :)

  • I flew a few weeks ago and opted out of the scan both times.  The first time they gave me a pat down and the second time they just let me go through the regular metal detector.   They were really nice and understanding about it... No big deal at all.  My OB said I could take the less drowsy Dramamine, and I did.  It was fine.  The only issues I had were needing to pee constantly in flight and getting INCREDIBLY gassy... To the point of it being painful.  I guess the lower air pressure and pregnancy bloat make for an unpleasant combo!

  • I flew 2 weeks ago at 13 weeks and again this week at 15 weeks. I'll fly again at 20 weeks. I've not had any issues with sickness - just very uncomfortable seats on AirTran this week (I'm going to upgrade to business class on my flight home tomorrow - hehe). I've not had to go thru the scan in any of the airports so far.

  • I flew at 4, 8, and 12 weeks (fly for work every month).  Granted my m/s was never that bad, but I brought ginger tea and ginger gum with me.  Also made sure to always have snacks available.  My m/s is brought on by motion so usually getting off the plane and straight onto a taxi was the worst for me.  An Auntie Anne's pretzel usually helps. :)

The full-body scan is nbd.  It's basically a low-level ultrasound.

I try to make sure I have an aisle seat so I can get up and walk around or go to the restroom as needed.

  • I flew last week and bc I hate flying the anxiety alone made me nauseous!! Sea bands work wonders! You can buy them at the drug store.

  • I've flown twice so far - first was a short flight around 9 weeks or so, and the second was an overnight international flight.  I did okay - make sure you have gum, hard candy or whatever works for your nausea on hand.  Also - when I traveled with my son, we have never had to go through the whole body scanner, they just exempt us, even when he is walking through.

  • We just came back from our family babymoon trip... The worst part for me was the delays (we were delayed leaving for Istanbul and leaving from Istanbul).  I took some of my anti-nausea medicine for my morning sickness, and was fine stomach wise. I did end up sleeping for a long stretch after we made it home.

I was uncomfortable enough during our delays to know that I'm not interested in taking the 14 hour flight home at the end of July, so family & friends will have to wait until December to see us (but hopefully the new baby will help to cushion that delay).
