2nd Trimester

Found out at 19 wks that I have Fibroids!!! Should I be worried?

I  just had my gender reveal ultrasound at week 19 ( TEAM PINK) Big Smile... even though the doctor said that all of my test results came back great and the baby is healthy and growing right on track-- He said that I have mini fibroids on my uterus..He mentioned that it is not abnormal to see this and said that they are very small  and should not affect the baby and will continue to monitor them for me and should dissolve after Menopause!!!  I was like MENOPAUSE!!! OMG~ I'm only 30...lol Indifferent  So far i have not had a complicated pregnancy- not many aches as of yet-- so I am thankful for that-- but just hope that everything goes well and that they do not get bigger...

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this??

  • Yep, I have them as well. We found out at our 16 week appt about them. Mine are about 2 mm which I'm told is small. I was told they would watch them because sometimes they grow larger with pregnancy, but it was likely nothing to worry about.

  • yes.  i have a giant... 8x13cm one!!!  that started growing whren preg with ds, and is growing again this pregnancy.  at 4mos pp i will be having it removed...it has been causing me some pain and pressure.  i didnt have it removed after ds bc it can impact your fertility, and my symptoms were not horrible.

as far as the small ones you have, the only symptom they usually cause is heavy bleeding, and many are asymptomatic.  fibroids rarely affect a pregnancy, esp ones that small.. dont worry.

eta ... by heavybleeding i meant heavy periods when youre not pregnant, not any bleeding during pregnancy.

  • Fibroids come and go.  they can disappear when you give birth - or explode over time.  they usually go away on their own.  Nothing to be worried about.  when they saw the on the u/s they would have been able to tell what "type"  they can be - they can be cancerous - not cancerous- the one thta are puss filled- explode and can cause pain.  I had one the size of a golf ball prior to TTCing.  it went away on its own.

  • When I was pregnant the first time around with my son, I found out at my anatomy scan that I had one.  Unfortunately it did cause complications with the pregnancy and I started having preterm contractions beginning at 25 weeks.  I was on bedrest for the remainder of my pregnancy and was in and out of L&D for bleeding, contractions, etc.  The good news, though, was that I was able to carry him to full term.

This time around, things seem to be calm (for now).  My OB said that every pregnancy is different, and the fibroid may not necessarily be an issue this time.  So I'm just waiting around to see, keeping my fingers crossed.

  • I've had a fibroid discovered during each of my ultrasounds?the count is now at three. My doctor and the two ultrasound techs all said that because of their relatively small size and the fact that they're inside the wall of my uterus and not on the surface of the inside of my uterus they're no threat to my baby. My doctor also said:

    - For some women, fibroids increase in size during pregnancy, for others, they shrink.

    - She's had patients with relatively large fibroids that never caused any problems during pregnancy.

    - If fibroids are near the cervix that may be a cause for concern during pregnancy.

  • Thanks Ladies for your responses!! I have another ultrasound the 2nd week of May so I will find out if they have increased in size or not-- they haven't been causing any pain yet-- and they just appeared late in the 2nd trimester... so fingers crossed!!! I just mainly want to make sure that they do not intefere with the baby's room to grow!!!
