? if you used M_Ms with potty training

When did you issue the reward?  We started last night with one M_M when he went pp.  Today, he did pp.. I gave him an M_M and then he said "oh.. I have MORE pp!" and went again.  So I gave him another.  I think I screwed up.  Maybe he needs to be dressed before giving him the M_M?  How do you know when they are "done" at that session?

  • HOnestly, I would have done the same thing.  We definitely went through a few days where G was "parcelling" out her pee and would go every 10 minutes to get  a jelly bean.....and I was ok with it.  It didn't last long (though sometimes she still will randomly ask for jelly beans when she pees...I'm fine with that too) and I was actually impressed with her ability to "get one over" on us.  I figure whatever gets them interested in going and recognizing that feeling, is worth it.

  • After he was done going pp, he'd dress, he'd wash his hands and we'd walk to the kitchen to get his m&m. So not until it was all said and done and we were out of the bathroom.

  • We use M&Ms and usually he gets them right after he pees.   He'll pee and say "I wanna get up".  I say "Are you all done? Do you need to pee pee more (want to make sure he got it all out)?".    He says "I get up".   He washes his hands and then he gets his M&M.   If I try to get him dressed again, he says "I get M&M first".

    Okay fine whatever.

Oh and sometimes he doesn't mention the M&M, so if he doesn't then I don't give it.

  • Oh and there are times that he'll ask for one before he sits on the potty. Like times when I KNOW he has to go and just won't sit.   I will use bribery.  "Heres' an M&M,okay sit on the potty now".

This.  We actually were getting so many mini-pps that we stopped with the M&Ms and went to the sticker chart.  She could play with stickers all day so that was fine with me and kept her chocolate intake to a minimum.

  • my rule was as long as there is tinkle in the potty, she'd get an M&M.

Eventually he will go all at once.

  • Claire managed to pee five times in about 20 minutes one night.  The last few times were drops, but we rewarded her.
