We just found out today that DD will probably need glasses. We find out for sure in two weeks. She has been crossing her eyes when things are up close to her face, which is why I brought her in.
How long did it take for your child to get used to the glasses? Did you notice a difference in their behavior at all?
My DD is also not walking yet so I'm having her evaluated tomorrow. However, I'm wondering if her vision would cause a walking delay? I just hope and pray that there's nothing really wrong with her.
Re: Does anyone's child wear glasses?
My son doesn't wear glasses - yet. He had laser surgery when he was still in the NICU for ROP, and most likely will need glasses in a year or two. However, I've seen LO's around your DD's age in glasses so they must have ways of keeping them on. I do also think it could contribute to delays, and that would be something I'd ask about.
Hopefully JessandJeremy will chime in - her cutie DS has been wearing glasses for awhile now. And, I hope that it makes a big difference for your DD!
Jace started at age 2.
My best advice is to try to schedule activities the first few days that will make the glasses HELPFUL. For example: trouble seeing far away? The glasses will be fixing that so plenty of thing to focus on far away: rides in car, trips to playground, etc. Avoid close up play because it's when the glasses are not helping that they're most likely to fiddle with them.
Since she has trouble seeing close up I'd plan on sitting with her to read, encouraging her to color and play with toys that she holds close. When the vision problem and subsequent correction is dramatic it's much easier to get them to leave them on because they value the improvement they get with the glasses.
It honestly took him only a day or 2 before he stopped touching them and they just became part of who he was.
I was CRUSHED that he was going to need glasses at first. I hated that it made it harder to cuddle with him, was afraid he'd get teased, etc. Now? He doesn't even look right to me without them because they're just such a part of who he is. It's not the big deal I was afraid it would be.
He's only 4 but has been very responsible with them. Only puts them on tables, not on the floor when changing, etc.
My other tid bit of glasses advice is that when it comes time for professional pics take the lenses out of the frames so she still has the frames on in photos. Our first pro photos with the glasses I didn't know this trick so we just took them off to avoid the flash glare but he just didn't look right in the pictures without them on.
Also - get a small glasses repair kit at the local pharmacy so you can tighten things down on the fly.
Keeping them clean will make you nuts but it gets easier as they get older.
I recommend getting the 1 year warranty as we went thru 4 sets of lenses and 3 frames within the first year. Not as much damage now that he's older but when they're younger they scratch them up pretty easily.
HTH!!
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.
Ethan started wearing glasses this past November and does great with them! He has one eye that was crossing as he got more tired. The Dr. said she could either do a patch or be more aggressive and do the glasses. I felt like I wanted to do everything I could now rather than just sit around and wait. The good news with a lazy eye is that being proactive between 2-6 is the best you can do! His Dr. thinks he'll outgrow them by the time he is 5....that being said....I think a little part of me will be sad to see them go!
It didn't take Ethan any time to get used to them. I thought for sure he would be pulling them off and chucking them. To everyone's surprise, he just keeps them on! He takes them off at nap time and at night and we are working on him putting them back on himself.
Ethan was a late walker but started walking before his glasses....so I can't answer that question for you. Just know that normal is up to 18 months!
Page me if you have any more questions....and I think children in glasses look super cute....just a bit biased though!
