And I mean a mw at a freestanding BC (no MWs have hospital delivery privileges in this state =(. Or is this never safe/allowed? I'm sure with my next pregnancy I'd probably wind up with my OB due to the same complications but in the fantasy world in my head I would feel so much more confident about VBACing if I weren't in the hospital with a surgeon to being with.
Re: VBAC with a midwife?
I VBACed with a CNM in a hospital but my friend is VBACing in a freestanding birth center with midwives in NH. So it is allowed (plus there are people on this board who VBACed at home). I would probably have chosen the free standing birth center route if the one near me allowed VBACs. Also, being close to the hospital would have been important to me.
All that said, the CNM in the hospital worked for me! I never saw the OB or any other surgeon-like people while I was there.
You definitely can, and there are women who do. In my area, no BCs take VBACs. So, it's hospital or home.
DH is extremely nervous about the birth process in general, so I agreed hospital births only. Home birth is really not for me anyway. I just feel more comfortable knowing I have support, if needed.
Good luck with your decision!
I vbac'd at home with a midwife. Where I live midwives are registered as primary care providers for pregnancy and birth and have full hospital privileges but I still felt better at home, and my midwife fully supported that.
The odds of a catastrophic uterine rupture after c-section are about 1/2000, which imho isn't worth the fuss against vbacs.
