Lately, Ava has been terrified of fire. I have no idea where it came from. Her class went on a field trip to a fire station a few weeks ago, and I had to reassure her a million times that there would not actually be any fire there and that she would be safe. She flipped out when an episode of Calliou came on that was about fire safety. She asks where the smoke detectors are all the time, and at night, I have to reassure her that there won't be a fire while she sleeps. The one good thing that has come out of it is that we remembered to check and change batteries in all of our smoke/CO detectors, and we found out that one of the units needed to be replaced.
Anyone else's toddler have a specific fear like this? I think it is strange because I have no idea where it came from.
Re: Anyone's child have a specific fear/phobia?
Bless her heart : ( I had a terrible fear of fires as a young child and all the way until 7/8th grade. To the point where, I thought if we had any disruptions to our routine (like, going to see a movie after school, or going to a restaurant after gymnastics) that meant we were going to have a fire that night.
Paige is terrified of bugs. She is always afraid of them when we are outside, but it is getting worse lately. The last few weeks, she has been coming in to our room multiple times a night crying that there are spiders on her pillow, bugs in her room, etc. We always just go in, look around, tell her there is nothing in here, and that she is safe.
Ugggh. It is heartbreaking. I think you/we are doing the right things. Reassure her, don't be "mean" about it - like, saying, "Ava, what is wrong with you? There isn't a fire. You shouldn't be scared." Obvs I know you would never be like that...
Hopefully this is just a phase.
Reed was really worried about fire after he saw the Toy Story 3 movie with the incinerator (sp?) at the Dump. Both of my kids are scared of dogs too. They aren't terrified, but they are pretty careful around them.
Poor Ava! I wonder why she is scared. It could easily be a book or TV show that freaked her out.
Reed was super scared of the busy ball popper and toys that moved on their own when he was younger too.
Hayden has some intense fears right now and it makes me so sad. He is mostly afraid of monsters/"mad boys" and the dark. He wakes up with nightmares every night. Putting him to bed is often toture and I try to do whatever I can to make him feel safe (night light or just keeping the light on, moving something that is casting a shadow and scaring him, etc.) but I really dont want to give him something like Monster Spray because I think it would be confirming that there are monsters.
I think 3 year olds have VERY active imaginations and while it is great for learning, this is a side effect.
If anyone has any great solutions, I am open to them! The nightmares make me want to cry.

Thanks for the reassurance. I know it is normal at this age for fears to develop, but it is so heartbreaking.
I'm sorry your kiddos are going through it, too.
Funny enough, we recently bought a fire pit for our yard, and Ava thinks that making "campfires" is the coolest thing in the world. She is not scared of it at all. I guess she doesn't associate that kind of fire with danger? Maybe because it is small and we are there to control it? Who knows. But at least she doesn't seem to generalize her fear to candles, bonfires, etc.
