Anyone pay OOP for NT Scan?

My insurance company is dirving me nuts, I guess it's much more difficult than I thought to determine if a procedure is covered or not...  I don't think it would change my mind about getting it or not, but if I do have to pay for it, I'd like to get a guesstimate.  I'm seeing anywhere from $200 - $800 online.  Does that sound right?

Re: Anyone pay OOP for NT Scan?

  • It is about $800.  The breakdown from my dr is as follows:

    Ultrasound - fetal/maternal eval = $305

    Ultrasound - Nuchal Translucency = $390

Blood test (3 tests) = $160 (total for all 3 tests)

    Collection fee & specimen handling = $40

To me, $800 is a SMALL price to pay for peace of mind.

  • I have no idea. Insurance stuff makes my head hurt lol. I'm lucky though and DH's cousin is our insurance gal so I just call her and she tells me what is covered and not. Honestly I don't even know anything about my insurance plan besides the amount I pay monthly... I guess I should maybe call her today and find out!

  • Actually, that adds up to around $900 but I also live in a very high cost of living area.  I wouldn't expect any place else in the country would be charging more than that.

IMO I would not pay $800 OOP for  NT test.  All it does is give you the likelihood of something being wrong but it does not give you any for sure answers.  If anything it will just cause you more worry.  I didn't have it done my first time around and I won't this time either.  I don't have any risk factors, family history, etc. and wouldn't do an amnio due to risk of m/c.  Therefore it would just cause me more stress and worry than what is needed.

You're clearly not PgAL.  I'm in a different frame of mind than you are.

  • I looked into it and if we were to pay for the NT Scan + the bloodwork OOP it would be close to $2,000.  My OB's office does not do it, so we would have to go to a Perinatal Specialist to get it done.
