Nurse vent

Ugh is it 7 yet!! The nurse we have today is a nice person and has always been very helpful and knowledgeable. With that being said I know she has been picking up lots of extra shifts, she told me she was and I think burning herself out. And I understand that and feel for her, but please do not slack off on dd's care. I decided I needed a mommy day, have not taken one since dd was born, and yesterday was a frustrating day, we are in the home stretch all dd needs to do is orally feed for 24 hrs so 8 total feeds, we got to 5 yesterday and she tuckered out. Still taking half though which is great! I am so proud of dd and know she will get there but still it was a little hard for me. She is not on infant driven feeds, she gets a bottle introduced every time. She has her 20 min window to finish. Well I called to see how her noon feeding went and the nurse said dd was too tired, I asked if she had taken any and the nurse said " no, I told you she was too tired I didn't even try"  What the hell!! ( sorry) I asked if she tried to gently wake her and she snapped back NO. She also told me she was too tired at her 9 feed but went on her break and a nurse who knows dd better was covering and gave her the bottle and she took 30cc out of her 40!!!! She sometime is too comfy all bundled in her crib and needs a few minutes. I understand if she is truly too tired and do not want to stress her, but she has never shown signs of stress during feeds, we are just building up her stamina. I know the nurse could careless when dd can come home, but every attempt counts, even if she only takes 10cc! Now I am beating myself up that I wasnt there and feel like I failed dd because I didn't give her a fair shot! I know it's one feeding and in the grand scheme of things won't make a difference, but still....

Re: Nurse vent

  • Sorry hun, that sucks.  We had our fair share of nurses who didn't try enough as well.  Especially with Aiden, who used a special bottle because of his cleft palate.  Some nurses simply didn't know how to use the bottle, and as a result Aiden wasn't getting any milk out of it.  They would write it down as a failed feeding when it really was the nurse's fault.  It took me or my DH being there every shift or calling to make sure the nurse knew how to use the bottle.  Eventually we also asked for him to be switched to a 4 hour schedule instead of 3 hours and it worked out.  Hugs to you.

  • If there is a specific nurse that you don't feel like is appropriately caring for your child you can request that that nurse not be assigned to your D.  We went through something similar with C and we just ended up giving the charge nurse a list of nurses that I knew would work with her on her feedings.  Feedings were our BIG hurdle to get home.

I hope your D catches on quickly and can go home soon.
