Sarafuss, thanks for asking that question about weight gain. It has been on my mind a lot lately, and I've been thinking of posting about it myself, though I rarely have time to make my own posts these days.
DS2 hasn't gained since his 12m appointment (maybe a couple ounces). Up until now, he has followed his brother's growth pattern almost exactly (usually just a hair bigger), but now he's dropped off significantly. He also BFs a TON for this age, whereas his brother was almost weaned at this point, but that's another post...
Dochas, thanks for your response. I feel like a lot of the responses didn't apply to my situation. It was good to hear that there actually could be something to look into and be prepared for -- especially given that I have his brother's growth for comparison, and they have deviated so dramatically.
Parenthood is so stressful!
Re: ***sarafuss & dochas***
I agree that Dochas' response was helpful because it validated some of my concerns. Almost everyone says he's fine and he very well may be fine and just a small baby. But it helps to know that I might not be worrying for no reason.
Is your DS2 getting taller? That is my biggest concern. If DS was following the 5-10% curve that he has been on since birth I wouldn't be as concerned. But since he is no longer on the chart for weight AND height I can't just chalk it up to him now being mobile. (Even though he just started crawling a week and a half ago).
Have you talked to your pedi about his lack of weight gain? I feel a lot better knowing my pedi is being proactive and ruling out problems that he may have.

Thank you - I didn't want to ring any alarms, but I don't really like the 'oh don't worry' when there might be something going on. The odds are that it's nothing but with growth the sooner you know the better. Mine dropped off for height and weight too. He was very big when he was born though. One of the doctors said 'he actually had no business being born that size' when he looked at family history. There was also a Mom on the bump, not sure if it was this board, who felt there was a problem with the growth and the pediatrician ignored it. And there WAS something wrong.
What I was told (from other Moms that had issues) is that even when there is a thyroid or growth hormone problem it is generally treated with medicine and not something to be devastated about. I was upset that he had to have blood drawn but apparently they all get a blood test around that age. So they will be drawing more blood for testing, but it will have to be done anyway.
I think you should try not to compare the 2 boys. Really try to look at just his own pattern. Easier said than done! My son seemed to still breastfeed more than other babies too. But then he started dropping two sessions at a time and weaned himself at 13 months. No wonder they don't give you a manual with these kids - they wouldn't follow it anyway!
