Success after IF

pregnant after ectopic (repost from 1st tri)

I'm just wondering if your dr is doing extra testing this time around?  I had an ectopic about a year ago and I just found out I'm pregnant. My dr did two hcg checks both which were ok (I felt like they were on the low side, but increased appropriately).  I just feel like maybe I should have one more hcg check just to be safe before my ultrasound at 7 weeks?  I'm quite the worrier though so maybe since they went up ok I should just wait?

  • Rather than an hcg check I would be asking for an early u/s to confirm correct placement.  You won't see much but you could confirm proper placement.

  • I had an ectopic four years ago and have been pregnant three times since.  Because I'm at higher risk for another ectopic, my doctor monitors me very closely until we see a hb.  I go in immediately for a beta (usually at 4w) and have at least one more beta during that week.  At about 5w I have an u/s to determine placement of the sac and then between 6w and 7w I have a viability u/s to find the hb.

My OB is generally a laid-back, wait-and-see kind of guy, but he does not mess around with early monitoring for me.  If I were you, I would ask for an u/s as soon as your beta hits 1500-2000.

    Congratulations!

Originally I was supposed to have an ultrasound earlier (in week 6) but my dr is going to be out of town.  Not sure what to do.  I'm just worried as busy as drs are that when they scheduled my ultrasound they didn't even realized I have a history of ectopics.

Does 7 weeks seem late for an ultrasound to make sure placement is ok with a history of ectopics?

  • With my first IVF pregnancy I had 3 HCG's before my u/s.

With my second IVF I had a bazillion HCG's before my first u/s at 5wk,6days. I was very nervous about its placement since my numbers were very low, not rising appropriately for the first 3 etc.

If having another would make you feel better than I would ask for another. I wouldn't do an u/s before 6 wks.

    GL and Congrats!

  • I would definitely indicate the Hx of ectopics; you may be correct that they did not realize this when you were scheduled.  I find that you need to be your own advocate.
  • I would push for an earlier u/s too.

    And Congrats on your PG!!!!

Yes, this seems late to me.  Mine was discovered at 6w5d and I had to have emergency surgery to remove it.

If you're not sure if they know about your history, definitely call them back right away and explain it to the nurse or whoever schedules the appointments.  I would absolutely insist on being seen sooner.  My 5w u/s usually takes less than 10 minutes - all they have to do is see that it's in the right place and measure it.

  • My first u/s was at 5 1/2 weeks, and that was to check location.  they didn't see much, just wanted to make sure the structure was in the right place.  I'd push for that.  Once you're at 6 or 7 weeks you run the chance of rupture and you don't want hospitilization, infection, surgery, or to lose one of your tubes!

  • When I found out I was pg w/ #2 I called the ob (surprise bfp so I couldn't call re office since I hadn't been there in almost 2 yrs) and made an apt and mentioned that I would need an early u/s to confirm the baby's placement. They argued w/ me at first saying "they dont do u/s that early blah blah blah" but I put my foot down and said that due to my ectopic history I needed an u/s as I wasn't going to wait 8 wks and chance my health to wait and see.

    I got that u/s at 5.5 wks

I was using a different obs office this time around and they hadn't been through my entire file yet. Had they looked they would have seen prior ectopic on my chart.
