Moby vs. Handsfree Mei Tai

Hi everyone,

I am due mid-May, and I'm looking into carriers. I can't decide between the Handsfree Mei Tai or the Moby Wrap. Its going to be hot on the east coast, so breathability is important. It seems the Moby has a UV model for purchase, but is a lot more fabric than the Mei Tai.

My main concerns are: Comfort on back/hips strain, breathability, safety, and for use on a size 18 woman.

Thanks for any input!

  • how about the ergo performance with the infant insert? it has maximum breathability and maximum support. look into that!

  • I loved my Moby but did find it really hot.  Keep in mind that DD was born in January!  I have heard good things about Mei tais but never used one.  I think either option would work on a plus size women.  I am about your size and have had no problems with carriers.  Anything that goes over both shoulders should be good with back and hip strain.  The PP mentioned the Ergo.  The actual carrier is supposed to be cooler but I have heard the insert is quite warm for baby.  If you're interested in wrapping, you could look into lighterweight wraps.  I just bought a wrapsody bali breeze wrap.  It is very lightweight and supposed to be great for summer.  It is a bit tougher than a Moby for a beginner since you will have discomfort if you wrap sloppy.  I have heard this just makes you a better wrapper quicker.  They also have a wrapsody stretch wrap which is similar to the Moby but lighter weight and also less stretchy.  This will allow you to wear LO for longer in the wrap.  I tried both of them in the store and the stretchy was a bit more comfortable for the newborn phase but I really wanted the lightweight comfort of the breeze.  Either I think would be good options for summer.
