All my girlfriends at work have nannies

Three of my close work friends who have had babies in the last year or two have nannies (who come in every day, don't live in). They all work from home full time like I do (our company is very supportive of telecommuting, so I can almost forgive them for having a sh!tty maternity leave policy).

They all said it's great having the baby near them all day so they know what's going on and aren't worried, and they know their baby is getting one-on-one attention. One plans to switch to daycare at 2 years to save some money.

I'm so excited because I had been mulling this over and now I'm even more convinced that it's the right thing to do and will be worth the extra money.

Now to find one. . . .

Re: All my girlfriends at work have nannies

  • So glad you wrote this post!  Just this Monday I came to the realization that what you described above maybe a great working mom arrangement for me as well.  I work in the federal government so although I cannot telework right now, there are some options that I hope to explore over the next few months.

The more I think about it, the more I think this may be a really good way to try to manage all responsibilities. But yes, where do I even start to look for one?

  • I think there are services that can help you, though I'm sure they charge a fee, but they do all the background checks and whatnot.

If any other bumpies have insights let us know!!!

  • I worked part-time (15 hours a week) up until we moved 2 weeks ago and we LOVED our nanny. LOVED LOVED LOVED. She was amazing and became part of our family. It was really sad to leave her, but we plan on staying in touch. Even though I only worked 15 hours a week, I was out of the house for 21 including commuting time. So she worked 3 days a week for 7 hours and had another couple side jobs. It was really perfect, and even though it was expensive, I wouldn't have traded it at all. I still had take-home money after paying her.

Since we've moved, I'm exploring contract opportunities, so if that works out, DS will go to a home daycare with a few other kids. At this point, he needs the social interaction and I think daycare will work for him now. Having the one-on-one with his nanny in the beginning was good, but he does need more time with other kids.

HIGHLY recommend a nanny if you can make it work :) I found ours through care.com and we were really lucky with how awesome she is.

  • I also agree with the need to interact with others as they get a little older so we do hope to transition into daycare.  So much to think about!!

  • We used a nanny while I worked. I SAH now. I highly recommend it. Feel free to ask any questions if you have them. We did have some trouble with our first nanny, but LOVED the second.

  • I have a nanny 1 day a week and my mother and MIL the other days.  I found the nanny through our local mommy board and another mother suggested her.  Care.com is great too though.

  • I have began looking for one since I would prefer a college age lady and they are planing their spring semesters right now....I will need her 3 or 4 days a week for 9-10 hour shifts. I can only afford $400 per week without insurance...I would like to also ask her to do some light housekeeping in the downtime - Of you who have had them before is that an okay about to pay for their time/help? How much housekeeping can I put on their plate??

  • I don't require much housework.  I just ask that she cleans up after DD, I don't expect her to do anything else.  Truthfully she doesn't have time to do anything else with DD on the move.  My friend has a nanny and they do DS's laundry and also cleans up after their son but nothing else.  I wouldn't increase their pay, I was a nanny in college and had to do the peoples laundry (not just the kids), I have to say it grossed me out!  I'd rather not have my nanny wash my underwear or see it for that matter!

The amount you pay really depends on the cost of living in your area. Ask around to see what others are paying in your area, or go onto either care.com or sittercity.com and see what nannies are requesting for payment. Make it clear that you will not be providing insurance. You also need to decide how you will pay them - if you will deduct their taxes from their pay and give them a W2, or take nothing out and make them 1099 employees. I really don't recommend paying under the table.

Be reasonable with housekeeping. Most nannies expect to do some. We made it clear that DD was the nanny's priority -- we did not want them doing housework while she was awake. When she was napping, the nanny would do dishes if there were any, and light housekeeping. Some people request laundry, vacuuming, etc. The more you expect them to do, the more you should pay.

  • I just used care.com to hire someone and so far she is great. It has only been about two weeks :) Posting an ad is super easy. You will need to determine what the going rate in your area is before you post a position though. And I don't think that you would be able to hire someone/interview until third tri as in my experience people won't wait months and months for the job to start.

  • We got ours 2 years ago off of care.com and love her. She mainly watches the girls, but she will pick up the playroom while the girls are sleeping. We pay $15/hr in the Boston area.

We are actually switching to an au pair in June because we need more with the 3rd on the way.
