I know that I'm very lucky that DD is so "healthy" - post NICU we had her home with me on RSV lockdown from July - October - then with a nanny at home from October to February and in Februrary we had to put her into daycare. Developmentally daycare has been the best thing that has happened to her but she has been sick since February 1st!!!!!! It started with an upper respiratory infection, fever, runny nose and nasal congestion - mostely at night - pulomonology started albuterol treatments a few times a day - her nasal congestion got worse and her chest got congested as well - so they raised the number of treatments a day and added pulmicort (a steriod) so now were up to 6 breathing treatments a day at this point the only time shes congested is right after a treatment or when shes eating - 30 days later she was no better and has developed an all day cough- another week goes by and all of a sudden she seems better out of the blue, cough is almost gone, congestion is almost gone - we get excited to go back to the pulomonlogist - BUT she gets worse right before we go and he prescribes THREE MORE MONTHS of 6x per day treatments. He also contradicts the hell out of himself by saying her coughing is all reflux related, so is the congestion when shes eating, but when I ask why we are treating her lungs if its her reflux acting up he says the coughing is because of the albuteral - that it makes her cough - so then he says "when she stops coughing - you can stop the albuterol" well you just said that med causes coughing!!!! so how is she going to stop coughing if shes on it??? he talks in circles that make sense until I really think it through - so I go to the Pedi and make an appointment to see the GI - pedi suggests stop the albuteral - which we did - coughing and congestion gone almost immediately - sooooooooo - pedi faxes notes to pulomonolgy who calls to warn we shouldnt stop the breathing treatments. I honestly dont know what to do now - I dont want to ignore her pulomonologist but his treatment seems to be making her worse - WWYD?
Re: Bronchilitis vs. Reflux - doctor/treatment vent and ?
Can you get an appointment with another pulmonologist ASAP? It sounds like you don't like or trust the one you are seeing, so I would be getting a second opinion.
I hope baby gets better soon!
This. I would get a second opinion.
We were in a very similar situation with C. She is on the same meds as your D. She would cough (a lot) and we would treat the cough with the breathing txs. Eventually we started noticing the coughing would get worse when we increased the txs. We mentioned it to her pedi (she doesn't see a pulmonologist) and he said "yeah it can cause coughing". Uhhh isn't that why we were doing the txs in the first place. Anyway long story not as long, we discountinued the breathing txs for the cough. If she is wheezing or has any sort of labored breathing we treat. Her cough is basically totally gone and her lungs sound so much clearer. And she's happier because she's not coughing all night.
I'm not a doctor so of course I can't tell you what to do. I agree with pps - get a 2nd opinion.
