Ds has very itcy eczema and some other skin issues. He's only 6 months old but wejust had some skin allergy tests done this morning. It came back mild peanut and milk allergy and moderate egg allergy. I'm still bfing so have been cutting out dairy eggs and nuts for a little over a week and will continue to do so. I have not really seen a change in his skin in the past week and do I'm hoping it will get better.
In your experience was the allergy testing accurate? Any other experiences you want to share? Ds also takes one bottle of hypoallergenic formula a day since my supply is getting lower. I don't WANT to stop bfing but am wondering if stopping all together will seriously improve his eczema. I have a follow up with the allergist next week. In the meantime I have to use all the ointments and steroid cream consistently with Benadryl st night to clear his skin up before they can determine more about the specific food allergy culprits.
Re: Has anyone ever had allergy skin testing on your kids?
Thanks. Did they ever tell you what could have been causing his skin issues when he was on the nutramigen ? was his skin bad before he started solids too? And did anything help besides time? Thanks

We had this done on DD, but she had just turned 2. She's had hives since December; and nothing can completely get rid of them. All environmental tests came back negative. ALlergist was hesitant to test her for foods, as he said the rates of false positives in food allergies in kids that young is fairly high. I demanded that he test for peanuts, b/c that one really scared me with her hx of asthma. It was negative. I've been doing my own investigative work and think she is either allergic to grapes, or the pesticides they put on them. Next step is to try her on organic grapes and see what happens:)
Allergist recommended zyrtec every 24 hours, instead of the Benadryl, just b/c it lasts longer.
We had it done on DS at 15 months after he broke out in hives when we accidently fed him something with walnuts in it. He came back positive for walnuts and pecans. I was still BFing and so I cut out all nuts. We used a Rx strength steroid cream, followed by a non-steroidal ointment, followed by Eucerin. We also did Zyrtec twice a day. It took a while for the eczema to clear up, so give it time. It takes a while for the allergens to fully leave your system.
Our allergist explained it me like this: you've got to eliminate the irritant and then treat the affected areas until the skin is properly healed. If the skin is not healed properly, other things (clothing, sweat, the carpet) can irritate the eczema and cause further breakouts. It's like having a leaky roof. If you have holes in your roof, you're going to have water getting in and causing mold and rot. Eczema is weak skin. It lets in irritants and bacteria, which causes inflammation. Our son is nut-free, but we're not as diligent with foods 'produced in a facility that produces nut products' etc. From time to time, he still has slight breakouts (especially on his feet), but I think those are mostly environmental (he has sweaty feet and socks make it worse).
One other thing to keep in mind... this from our pedi: daily baths are a must for kids with eczema! You want to moisturize with water and then seal in that moisture with THICK cream (Eucerin or Aquaphor) not lotion. And it needs to be quick... take him out of the water, pat dry, and apply the goop.
And please try not to give up on BFing just yet! Give it another month, treat the eczema topically, and see if gets better, before you decide to stop.
