Hi, I've been a off and on exerciser the past few months and have lurked a little bit. I had a question I was hoping to get some advice from those who have more experience.
I've always been fit, enjoyed working out. I never have had problems with my body as far as pain. For the past two years I worked out at a gym consistently. I decided to start running. I started out very gently with walking/light jogging. Then I dropped my gym membership to save money maybe 5 months ago. I decided instead to do 30 day shred, and running, and some yoga at home. This is where my problems with body pain began.
I have had to take many breaks in working out due to pain in my right knee, the inside area. But it would be fine after a day or two and I'd start up working out again, only to feel the pain again a few days later. I am NOT pushing myself at all. Like seriously my "runs" consist of mostly a fast paced walk with intermittent jogs. Specifically because I don't want to aggravate my knee.
So two weeks ago I did my run/walk(2 miles) on a Monday on Tuesday I did the shred and since then I haven't been able to do anything. I'm not in constant pain, more like when I bend my knee, or when I stand up from sitting down, my knee feels tight and I feel a sharp pain. Additionally I have a random swollen spot on the inside of my ankle under the bone, that feels like a bruise when touched even gently. And to add to that my hips feel tight and very sore. Again not always, just when I move change positions like from sitting to standing.
Now...normally I could chalk the hips up to me needing to stretch better, but to have them hurting 2 weeks later, when i haven't worked out at all since then? And then my knee has never bothered me this long. Add in the weird ankle issue, I'm starting to get worried.
Like I said I've never had an injury, so I don't really know what to do besides the whole ice and elevate. should I see a doctor? If I should who do I even go to (I know that sounds like a lame question)? Any other advice?
Sorry this got so long, I'm just really frustrated with my body right now. I'm turning 30 this year and I'm feeling like a little old creaky lady who aches when I move.
Re: Knee/hip/ankle pain...WWYD
I agree you need to call your doctor who is better suited to assess you than us
With that said, I would suspect the hip is directly correlated to the knee, which is likely a mild sprain that has been aggravated. Your knee probably needs ice, 20 min on, 20 min off to reduce the swelling. It also needs rest if it is a sprain.
The hip needs to be stretched. Try taking a warm bath/shower if you cant walk, or warm up with a walk and stretch your hip/IT band. Do this everyday, preferably 3 times or more holding for 30-45 secs. Google stretches if you aren't sure what to do.
The ankle thing is a mystery to me, not sure about that. For what it's worth I am a kinesiologist with lots of experience in injury rehab so mg advice isn't totally out of left field.
