YEAST RASH. Baby's got it, confirmed by her pedi today. ![]()
Since I only just started CD'ing, I haven't had to strip before, but I understand that now I will have to since yeast can continue to live in the fabric, right? I've done a lot of research online, but it's overwhelming with different variations of stripping. So here are my questions for those of you who have conquered the yeast beast...Thanks in advance for your help!
Note: I have a top-loading HE washer--not very common, but I assume I just treat it the same as a front-loading HE washer. Dallas County has "moderately hard" water.
1) Strip - What is your favorite way to strip--is there a method that is specific to yeast? I have a sample pack of RLR. I would prefer not to use Blue Dawn.
2) Wash routine - is there anything special I should do to my wash routine to keep yeast at bay in the future?
3) Cream - What is your favorite diaper cream to keep yeast at bay once I clear up DD's bum (to clear it up, pedi wants me to use a combination of triple paste, cortisone and lotrimin...so wondering what to use after its headed)? I have the Angel Baby Bottom Balm. Is this the preferred? I keep seeing posts about coconut oil, grapefruit seed extract and tea tree oil....
4) Wipes - I'd like to start using cloth wipes in my wipes warmer instead of disposable--is there a good solution recipe specifically for yeast-prone babies?
5) Diet - We also learned at her pedi appt that DD has eczema. I think I have a baby with super sensitive skin and I'm guessing with that plus the yeast problem, I probably need to change my diet up (DD is EBF)...has anyone tried that to manage yeast? (Start taking probiotics, cut down on sugar, etc.?)
I'm eager to win this battle so that I can finally enjoy CD'ing!
Re: ?s for those who have conquered YEAST (long)
Well, we just recovered from the yeast rash from Hell. Ugh, you have to go through it to really understand it.
This is what i did.
EVERY WASH: Initial cold wash, prewash: 25 drops or so of TTO; same amount of grapefruit seed oil, 1/4 cup bleach in wash. Regular Hot wash routine as normal. EDIT Bleach kills the yeast, TTO and GFSE kills the spores.
In cloth wipes solution, 3 drops of tto and 1 drop grapefruit seed extract to 12 oz of water and 2 cubs of wipe formula
I set aside certain diapers for her to wear during the yeast rash, so I was using my Kawaii's and prefolds only... I didn't want my entire stash contanimated. We used lotromin and it did NOTHING so we got nystatin and had to go through 2 tubes before the yeast was killed. If she ever gets yeast again I'm going straight for the nystatin. I think her rash was fully developed and it was too late for the lotromin to work when I finally took her to the pedi when I couldn't clear it up.
^All of that.
I messed around with a bunch of stuff, but trust me, go BLEACH. I used detergent with GFSE, and added TTO to the rinse. Turn up your water heater to at least 130 in advance - yeast dies only above ~122.
Ditto the pp's. Bleach, not oxygen bleach, chlorine bleach. A lot of articles out there will say oxy bleach is okay, I found it wouldn't kill the yeast. Also GFSE is great. I added 1tsp either to a warm prewash, or the hot wash. The bleach and GFSE combo worked wonders for our 2 week battle with yeast after antibiotics.
I have tried treating the yeast while DD is still in CD's, but I find that I can get the yeast treated so much better if she's in sposies, and I'm not scrubbing zinc oxide off my pockets either!
As for wipe solutions, avoid anything with lavender! Lavender EO can make yeast worse! I do either 2 cups of water with 15 drops of GFSE, or have just recently started using 2 cups pre boiled water, 1tbsp of baby wash (I use Aveeno), 1 tbsp of olive oil, and 15 drops of GFSE. My DD has broken out in a rash with every other wipe solution out there, but her bum is smooth and clear with this solution.

Bleach and really hot water. Also, bleach will be rendered uneffective if all of the poop hasn't been washed out. So, to be really sure, wash everything as normal, and then wash it again with bleach. And then an extra rinse.
Oh, how I wish I had just tried bleach to begin with.
In my LO's case, her bottom was generally red, with darker red splotches that almost looked like burns. She also had a ton of super small red dots that looked prickly. They were never raised, so I wasn't sure that it was yeast since yeast can be described as a cluster of raised red bumps. Hers didn't look like that, but pedi said that not all yeast rashes look like that.
Thanks ladies for all of the helpful information!
Here is what I think I'll do--hopefully someone will correct me if I'm wrong.
Step 1: Do a regular wash cycle to clean diapers (cold pre-wash, hot wash with detergent, cold rinse)
Step 2: Start the bleach and EO treatment....to cold pre-wash, add TTO. To hot wash, add bleach and GFSE. Follow with a couple of cold rinses to remove bleach.
F/U questions....
1) I only have 5 cloth diapers to treat (I did the cloth trial and only kept 5...the rest of my stash hasn't been opened yet since I was holding off until I knew what was going on with her bottom)---so since I have such a small load, should I adjust any of the amounts of bleach and EO listed above? Or maybe just throw in a couple of towels?
2) Bleach--so if not oxy, is plain old Clorox ok?
3) Rinses to get out bleach--hot, warm or cold?
4) She will be in sposies until it's gone. So after it's gone, should I be adding any TTO or GFSE to her usual wash routine or is that being overly cautious?
Thanks a million!
