Re: Slow rising hcg levels they think eptopic
I had a similar situation in November/December. My hcg levels were all over the place. Up a little, then down, then up again. At about 6w, they did an u/s to see if they could see the ectopic. It wasn't big enough so they couldn't see anything. No baby in my uterus and nothing on my tubes. At that point, they should have seen something in my uterus (at 6w) if it was a health pregnancy. We did the methotrexate that day. Unfortunately, my ectopic was too far along at that point and the methotrexate did not work and I ended up having surgery Christmas Eve.
I agree on getting a second opionion. But not to freak you out, don't wait to long. It's my understanding that methotrexate only works up to a certain point. Once you get too far along you may need mutiple injections (which you dont want) or surgery.
GL and T&P's.
I am so sorry that you are going through this. I wish that I could be more encouraging, but your hcg levels are consistent with an ectopic pregnancy :-(. At the least, they are not consistent with a normally progressing pregnancy. Most betas will rise by at least 66% every 48 hours in early pregnancy, and failure to rise 50% is confirmation of a nonviable pregnancy (regardless of location). Because of very rare cases (like vanishing twin), it is common practice to to continue to monitor hcg levels until they reach the "discriminatory threshold" which is about 1000-1500. At that point, you should definitively be able to see an intrauterine pregnancy if there is one by transvaginal ultrasound.
It is frustrating, but oftentimes, the ultrasound findings are not conclusive in ectopic cases (in terms of actually finding the pregnancy outside of the uterus).
PP mentioned that ectopic pregnancies often do not present (show symptoms) until about 6 weeks on, and that you will definitely feel it. However, it is vital to understand that a large number of ectopics are actually asymptomatic until rupture (or at least until they cannot be medically resolved, and thus require surgery because they are too large).
PP mentioned methotrexate only works to a certain point and this is true. It is most successful under 3500 hcg and contraindicated over 5000 hcg. Also it is not an option if a heartbeat is detected or if there are symptoms of rupture.
I hate that you have to go through this, and these are not easy decisions to make. I hope that it resolves soon, and that you find peace. I know it is hard. I have been through it myself. I will be thinking of you, and I hope you report back and tell us how you are doing.
Thank you everyone so yesterday I was in the e.r. Again I got my
Levels checked again and ultrasouns. I'm still to early to see anything I'm only 4 weeks. They said the mass they saw hasn't got any bigger and hasn't moved so that's good. I was really dehydrated yesterday and had a headache so they hooked me up to a I've for fluids. My hcg levels came back lower then my last one. It was 971 down to 951. I have hope threw my family history I'm not ready to give yet I got a new obgyn I'm meeting with tomorrow because the one I was seeing kept pressuring me into aborting it she didn't even care about my family history. I need a second opinion. I just hope by 5 or 6 weeks they see something in my uterus I'm only 21 and newly Engadged
my fianc? is always by my side.
