C-sections

shoulder dystocia

Hello,

I had a mostly successful vaginal birth two years ago, but my son had mild shoulder dystocia - he wasn't stuck for long but it took an episiotomy, some strong pushing, and legs over the head to get him out.  He was 8 pounds, 9 ounces at 39 weeks.  I'm now a few weeks away from delivering baby number two.  This one started measuring big around 32 weeks and now is in the 85th % according to the 36 week sono.  My Dr. isn't pushing a scheduled c-section (yet) but mentioned at my last appointment that if baby is still measuring so big at 38 weeks, we will have a serious discussion about whether the risk of vaginal delivery - knowing the size of the baby and prior dystocia - is worth it.  I'm not anti c-section, but I'm hoping someone on here has some experience with this and might be able to share a story.

Thanks!

  • This is a good link, and she has sources to back her up. https://birthsen.tmdhosting930.com/?p=1531

Is it okay with your OB to push in a vertical position? Squatting vs. being on a bed could make a difference.

  • I had this exact situation. My first son was only 7lbs 11oz and got stuck. I also don't think it was a major dystocia but it got hectic for a minute or two. Anyways, my second son was born at 35 weeks due to pre-e and was 6lbs 15oz. He came out just fine. With this last baby I never got pre-e like I did with my first two and I went 10 days overdue. She was measuring 9lbs 2oz on the ultrasound 2 days before I had her. The doctor did reccomend a Csection because of her size. It was everything I never wanted and I cried at the thought but I knew that if my son got stuck at only 7lbs11oz that there was a HUGE risk of my daughter getting stuck. I had a C-section 2 days later and she was born at 8lbs 12oz. I'm really not sure I would have got her out and honestly I'm glad I didn't try. She was born healthy and there was no emergencies as far as her being stuck for too long or me having a major episiotomy.
