Pedi recommended hard-soled shoes for DS2. Any recs?

DS2 cruises like a champ and walks behind walking toys with no problems, but he has a hard time getting a good balance and taking steps on his own because his feet turn out so badly.  He has major pigeon-toe, and he stands on the sides of his feet.  They almost look like clubfoot sometimes except his feet are flexible and not stuck in that position.  Anyway, she recommended trying hard-soled shoes to see if that would help keep his feet in the correct position which is so opposite of what I've always heard with flexible shoes and the Stride Rite ones we've always used, etc.  Anyone else hear this recommendation?  And any recommendations for good shoes for this situation?  Thank you!

  • Is he walking on the outside edges of his feet? or is it on the inside edges(arches) but with the feet turned out? I would go to a Stride Rite store and see if they carry those old fashioned looking walking shoes that are like high tops but in white leather.

If the shoes do not help with the issue, you may want to consider going to an orthopedist and have his feet evaluated. Nate wears orthotics (SMO's) on his feet to correct his pronation (rolling in and flattening on his arches) which is "way, way bad" according to his physical therapist. You probably won't have to go that route, but an orthopedist would be able to point you in the right direction for what level of intervention your DS needs.

  • He walks on the outside edges of his feet.  I see the old fashioned walking shoes on their site, but they're not like what we had growing up anymore, they're very soft-soled which is opposite of what we need.  :(  The only thing I'm seeing similar is maybe the kswiss shoes.  I'm sorry that Nate is dealing with feet problems.  I hope the orthotics are helping him!  Thanks for the advice!

  • Ethan was a late walker due to fis feet turning out. We worked with a PT and saw a huge difference with an arch support that we add in his shoes. I think they are called chipmunks. His feet no longer turn out!

Thank you!  I think I'm going to go ahead and get him in with a pediatric podiatrist to make sure we're using the right shoes/orthotics/whatever to help him out.  This makes me feel hopeful that there's something easy that can help him.  :)
