Oh no! DS asked to give up pull ups at night!

DS  turned 4 yesterday.  He was potty trained right after turning 2 and had hardly ever had an accident.  Until now, he wears a pull up at night and we have never made an issue of it.  Some days DS would wake up dry and other days wet.... So we have continued with the pull ups at night (not at nap).  Today, DS announced to me that since he is 4, he does not want to wear pull ups at night.  So DH and I agreed.

We let DS know that he can/should get up to use the bathroom at night if he needs to (up until now he had to stay in bed until morning).  Of course he has already gotten up twice to "try".  

I am thinking that DS may be up 20 times to tinkle tonight just for the fun of it.... OR I will add changing/washing sheets to the list of 654,476 thinks that I do in trying to get out of the house with 2 kids each morning.

 

I am proud of my little guy for being independent, but would not have minded waiting a few more moths ;-)

 How did it go for you when your LO dropped the night pull ups?

    We're not there quite yet but one of my boys has started waking up dry most mornings recently so I've been wondering about this, too. I'm interested to see the responses! Your experience is one of the reasons I'm most reluctant to ditch pull-ups at night; I can see this morphing into up and down all night long.

    At 3.5 DS wanted to wear underwear and was up 3-4 times a night just to try because he was so worried about an accident.  He doesn't nap so this was a huge issue.  i put him back in underjams for the night.  Last week he started underwear at night again and hasn't gotten up.

    DD1 dropped pull ups at night right around Christmas. She was waking up FULL before that, still leaking every once in a while they were so full...

    Well, she just decided one day that she was done w/ them and it was totally fine. Has had only 1 nighttime accident since Christmas.

    I was in shock that it went so well. :) Hopefully it'll be the same for your DS! Good luck :)

    Honestly, if he is asking to stop wearing them, he may be ready.  My DD day trained at around 3 and was a super hard sleeper at night and I was thinking she would never night train but starting at around 3 1/2, she started having more days than not where she woke up dry but still never woke at night to go potty.  A few months before she turned 4 she told me she was ready to be night trained and done with pull-ups./  She started waking up at night to go or sleeping all night and waking up dry.  She has not had an accident yet.  She was ready!!!

    We've been doing it since we started PTing. We make sure he gets up to pee when we go to bed and usually end up with a dry bed in the morning. If we're not careful about giving him drinks past a certain time at night, it's pretty much a guarantee for a wet bed in the morning. But if we're good about cutting him off and getting him up to pee, no accidents.  Just keep a backup set of sheets on hand in case he does wet. Good luck.

    My DS did this one day.  I told him if he had accidents he would have to go back to wearing pull ups - he was still waking up wet 95% of the time.  He has had 3 accidents in 6 months - which is reasonalbe in my book.  Just one suggestion if he gets up in the middle of the night don't assume he needs to go to the bathroom put him back to bed unless he asks you to go to the bathrrom.

    My oldest asked right after he tunned 4, so we made a deal. If he could stay dry for a week or two then we would move him to undies. He stayed dry for two weeks ; ) first night in undies he wet his bed. Then he stayed dry for a week, and we moved him to undies again and over the last two years he has maybe had 2 accidents and all early on. My middle guy gets so happy when his training pant is dry (very rare), so we told him the same deal. Stay dry for a week or two and he can wear undies. My littlest guy could go to undies (2 and a half), but not sure if that would hurt #2's feeling or put too much pressure on him. The youngest never wakes up wet or will wake up to go on the potty.

    Update: he went through last night with no pull up.  Got out of bed twice to pee shortly after I out him to bed (I think it was more novelty than having to go... But twice wasn't so bad... I expected he would get up more times than that).  This morning he woke up dry!  He was very pleased with himself!  We will see how it goes tonight!

    DD was day trained for about 6 months (she was 2.5) when she asked to wear big girl panties to bed instead of a pull up. I had a potty seat in her room that she got up to use if she needed to but she pretty much never had an accident after we switched.

    My oldest starting taking them off at night a bit prior to 3 and for a good 6-9 months we couldn't get him to wear them.  Sadly he's soaking wet in the mornings so he's not even close to being night trained.  We started taking him to the bathroom in his sleep.  I was petrified because he's a light sleeper but it went well.  He'd go to sleep between 6:30-7, we'd take him around 8-9 depending on if he'd had much to drink after dinner or not, DH would take him again before he went to sleep around 11ish and if I woke to pee in the night I'd take him again for good measure (usually around 2-3am).

    Even with that regime I was still washing sheets a few times a week and it sucked!  Sheets plus waterproof covers take a lot.  Amazingly we got him back into pull ups around 4 and I've been soooo happy.  Of course now his little brother (3) is dry 99% of the time while DS #1 is not only still wet but last night even peed out of his pull up Surprise so we've got to keep #2 in them also to keep the peace.

    I really think I am the minority here because my daughter was potty trained day and night by 2. I stopped using pull up by (I am thinking) 18 months purely because (at the time) I was a single parent with no child support and I refused to keep buying them. I used to wake her up about 3-4 hrs after she went to bed to go potty. She has an accident *maybe* once every 4-7 months. That is usually because she was with her g'parents and they let her drink up until she was handed off to me or a really bad dream. 

    I agree with PP. He decided he was done and will do great. Of course there will be accidents but not as many as you may think.
