Need advice about formula!!!

I am trying to wean LO off of pumped bm and onto formula.  I started mixing thinking that would make a smooth transition.  I started with Enfamil Newborn and it was fine for a few days and then went to hell.  She got really gassy and was fussy for the entire day on Monday.  We then switched her to Enfamil for gas and fussiness.  She is doing a little better, but is definitely uncomfortable after eating still (with gas drops).  So here are my questions:

1.  Is it possible that mixing the bm and f is making the gas worse?

2. Do you have a rec for a formula that helped with gas?

3. Am I not giving the formula enough time?  Should I be sticking it out longer than a few days?

My husband had a rec of Nature's Best All Organic but I have never heard of it.  TIA!

  • we use similac, but when i talked to the feeding hotline thing they offer i was told it can take up to 2 weeks to adjust

  • I switched from bm to formula about 2 weeks ago and LO was super gassy! I went from Enfamil Newborn to the GentleEase and his gas is MUCH better! He's still fussy so I may  switch to soy if the fussiness doesn't ease up

  • 1. Yes, this is very possible. When I switched Aria, mixing the two made her a little gas ball. Id suggest giving them seperately.

    2. We started with Enfamil newborn bc of the samples we had. Her gas was awful with it. We switched to Similac sensitive (again, bc we had samples) and it cleared her right up. (she still gets gas from time to time, but nothing abnormal)

    3. Yes. Give it a week or two.

  • I think your husband is confusing two formulas ;) Earths Best and Natures One. We switched from Enfamil gassy one because the first two ingredients are sugar and I wasn't comfortable supplementing her with that. We use Earths Best and haven't had a problem. It's only a couple more dollars than regular formula.

  • We just started using Earth's Best (powder). Before that we used Similac newborn (the blue label, premade, not powder) bc we had samples from pedi.  I didnt notice a difference in grassiness--- he's equally as gassy on Earth's Best!

In my research, I decided against Nature's One bc of reports of arsenic and it's a toddler formula, not meant for infants.

I would check out their website. That claim was a baseless claim on Dr.Oz who loves to frighten people and bring other "experts" on that don't have qualified research. They also explain why they use the language Toddler even though it's also a infant formula :)

  • Could it be the bottle you are using? We have had great success with Dr. Brown's bottles with both our sons.

Additional comment:We had the same problem with our son.The other thing is our doctor told us sometimes gas drops can make it worse as it forces the gas out which can also be painful.

  • We used similac sensitve because that seemed obvious but still had issues. Our pediatrician said that they usually recommend enfamil gentlease because it's proteins are the most broken down and it's most similar to breast milk. Have been very happy with it. Even tried to use some free samples of enfamil newborn and infant that we got in the mail and it just makes her so uncomfortable and I felt guilty for even trying so I threw it away. Only using the entleasefrom now on.
