DD got bit on the wrist at daycare yesterday. She's fine, and I realize it happens, but my concern is she will either continue to get bit by the unknown biter, or possibly start biting herself. What are your experiences?
Yes this happens a lot at this age and at daycare. At our daycare the teachers make an "accident/incident" report. If I see a bite or bruise that wasn't there I report it to them, and they keep an eye on it.
Does your daycare do this? never seen my kid bite himself though.
DS has been bit half a dozen times at daycare, and has bit other kids 2 or 3 times too. We always get a report from daycare if they have any kind of injury incident (bit/biter, fall, bruise, etc) so we always know what and when it happened. I was pissed the first time it happened! Then I realized kids are kids and especially when they are teething, they bite - they just do. DS bit me dozens of times when he was in the thick of teething! But it has definitely tapered off now that he's a little older (he's 16 months) - he doesn't bite as often, nor is he bitten by his peers often either.
I talked with our daycare teachers, just to understand how they handle biting incidents and to let them know how much it upset me (at first). Now, I'm just happy when he comes home without any bruises - those toddler kids play rough and still don't have great coordination or balance, so I swear he comes home with some kind of bump every day.
Yes, twice. Both times there was an incident report that I had to sign from the daycare. It's apparently really common at this age - the teacher says the kids are exploring what their mouths can do. Plus they lack for ways to communicate with each other. Neither bite has broken the skin and the mark faded quickly. DD is not a biter herself.
DD was bitten (bittten? bit?) by a new kid at her in home daycare back in October. It was pretty bad, because he got her twice on her arm and also on her cheek (you could see the "tooth ring" around her cheek for weeks). We trust our DCP completely, and DD loves her, but it definitely rattled us, because I felt like one bite would have been bad enough, but this was several.
Our DCP said that she hadn't noticed any aggresive behavior in the new kid. At that point, however, he had only been there for a few hours. She said she went into the kitchen to make lunch, and the kids were all playing nicely in the living room (she can see them from the kitchen, but had her back to them while she was getting drinks for them from the fridge). She said she thinks he bit her arm first, but that DD didn't cry. She thinks she cried when he got her face, because that's when she heard her and came running in to see the mark. She didn't notice the ones on her arm until later that day, which made us think they weren't as "severe", which might explain why DD didn't cry about them.
Anyway, our DCP actually "kicked out" the new kid, since it was his first day there. She called the parents of the kid, and they came and got him. She told me that she got the sense he had done it before, because when she asked them, they acted sort of strange and a little "guilty". She said her loyalty was to our DD, as she has been there since she was three months old.
Anyway, I know that was a ton more info than you probably needed.
Just wanted to say that I understand your concern. When I picked DD up that day and saw the marks, I was horrified. I know kids bite sometimes, but this was more like an attack, and it broke my heart to think DD was being hurt like that.
To answer your question, DD has never bitten anyone, despite that incident. I hope it stays that way!

I wrote that awkwardly...I meant I don't want her to turn to biting other kids now that she has seen it done [to her].
They told H about it when he picked her up, but there was not a formal report. It didn't break the skin and she has not had any other injuries since she started there when she was 11 weeks old. She is entering her terrible twos a little early, and I am more worried this will be something she puts in her bag of tricks.
DD is 20 months old and is in a class at a center with kids mostly her own age. She was bitten once about 6 months ago and hasn't ever been bitten since then, nor has she ever bitten anyone at school. She has bit me a couple times, but I think she was just doing it out of curiosity and it wasn't around the time she was bitten.
Liam has been bitten several times at daycare. In the infant room they had a serial biter and then he's had a few incidents in the toddler room, including a time where a child actually bit him on his back, between his shoulder blades, hard enough to leave perfect top and bottom teeth marks. That was the worst incident.
If it makes you feel better, Liam has never, ever bitten another kid. He has always been very gentle and continues to be. Also, the biting incidents have become fewer and farther between as the kids have gotten older and have fewer issues with teething.
There is a little girl in our play group who is constantly biting, pulling hair, pushing, and hitting. A picked up hitting and biting recently but I don't think it was from her. Actually, he usually seems pretty oblivious when getting beat up.
DD has been bitten 5 or 6 times at school. Her teachers don't tell me who the culprit is, but I'm pretty sure it is one serial-biter. It is very common, and I too was worried that DD would pick up the bad habit. However, when I asked her teacher if they had ever seen DD display any behavior that might lead up to doing that, she said "NO, Ella is a lover!" And I have certainly never seen her show any signs of violent behavior at home.
He's been bitten many times, but he's also been the biter a few times. It's a phase they go through, and it was hard for us to correct because he didn't bite at home, only at daycare.
The only time I was really upset was when he was bitten on his face and it drew blood. Eventually the kid who was biting him was suspended for three days. We haven't had any problems since Christmas.
My son is the biter lately and they reassured me they take care of it and remove him from the situation, and that it happens a lot at this age. He is cutting teeth and only seems to do it at DC...
