Preemies

When did your preemie...

walk or talk? Sam is not yet doing any walking unassisted or any talking other than babbling. I know it'll all explode one day and I will beg for him to be quiet, but I want to hear his sweet voice and have him run to me. :( He cruises but no steps yet.

I know it's still "early" but I am getting impatient.

Re: When did your preemie...

  • Thanks! I know I may be trying to "rush" him. He's actually going to an orthopedist because when we hold his hands and he walks, he does so on his toes. We're working on everything, but I can't wait for a day we don't have to work so hard.

  • My boys were born at 30 weeks and walked at 17 months... so 14.5 months adjusted.

They didn't start talking until close to 2.  At 20 months they were using single words.  At 2 they had many single words, but no 2 word phrases.

I totally get this!  C started taking unassisted steps right around 15 months, 12 adjusted.  She's been saying a few words for a while now.  Mama, dada, tah-ter (our dog), nana.

Also I wanted to add that DD started out on her toes too.  She gradually just grew out of it as she was bearing weight more and more often.

  • DS started cruising around 13 mos actual (9 mos adjusted) and began walking right at 17 mos actual (13 mos adjusted).  He had no words besides mama and dada at his 18 month dr. appointment, but had an explosion soon after that.  He's 21 months now and has probably 40 - 50 words.  He has been in early intervention since 14 mos for speech/communication, which I'm sure has helped.

There is such a wide range of normal, it's hard to not be impatient when you see other kids doing what something your child can't do yet.

  • My LO is right around the same age as yours... he is 14 months (in 2 days!!!!) and 11m adjusted. He is cruising, walking with a walking toy, and is able to walk holding one finger on one hand (he does better with one side over the other). He sees a PT once a week and the PT thinks that LO will be walking by the summer... so 16m/13m.... I think it may be sooner... but we will see. He is also only babbling (a lot!!!!!) but we went for our NICU follow up and they put him at 10m for expressive language (he had turned 11m adjusted the day before he went) so I was happy with that. They aren't thinking delay or anything at this point. The NICU follow up team also told me to ONLY compare him developmentally to his adjusted age until somewhere between 2 and 3 years old. So you should be thinking of your LO as an 11m old in terms of development! GL!
  • I know we followed adjusted age. We see PT, OT and general therapist once a week with him. His last F/U clinic was in December. He was right at adjusted age or higher but seems to be slowing down. In January, he started to cruise so PT said "Definitely May" but May is 20 days away and I don't he'll walk.

I'm not in a rush, really, for him to walk. I think I am just getting frustrated with this preemie business. After the 3 months in the NICU and months of lugging a oxygen tank, I thought I had gotten over my worst heartaches. It just hurts to see him behind.

He does sing along to music though with a babble. Specifically "Itsy Bitsy Spider" and "Starships" by Nicki Minaj. Thank DH for that one!

  • hey darlin'!

stella was born at 28.5 weeks & weighed 2 lbs.  she started crawling at about 13-14 months actual & didn't start walking unassisted until 17 months actual.  As far as talking, she always had the bare minimum amount of words they are supposed to have from 1-2 years and then around 27 months, her language exploded and her vocabulary is seriously impressive now.  hang in there.  it will come & I promise you won't have to work so hard for everything soon. XOXO

  • I'm glad you posted this!  I'm feeling the exact same way.  Annie was a 34weeker, but she was only 2lbs 12oz and I think her still small size is making it hard for her to walk.  She cruises with abandon, pushes a walking toy, and will walk holding hands, but shes been doing that for a few weeks and hasn't made any other real progress.  I'm trying really really hard not to compare her to other kids her age, or younger who are already walking, but its hard.  Its so nice to hear about other babies' timelines.  I keep telling myself that she WILL walk herself into kindergarten
  • Our twins were born 6 weeks early. They started walking at 13 months actual age and started talking about then too. But then the language kind of tappered off. The pediatrician said the real "language explosion" is between 18-24 months - and we've found that to be the case. For what it's worth, I was not born a preemie but I didn't start walking until 18 months. My brother started at 9 months. And we were opposites on language. I talked early and my brother didn't start talking till he was two. Sometimes there is an underlying developmental issue, but sometimes there isn't. It seems like you are being proactive though. Hang in there!
