I am scheduled for a c-section for next Tuesday and I am really nervous. Seven years ago I had an emergency c-section, and it's all coming back to me and I'm hoping that I will have a better experience compared to the first.
Is having a scheduled c-section different then an emergency c-section?
What should I bring with me?
I had my 38 week appt, and my Dr, and I discussed my surgery, he was surprised to know that surgery was scheduled for 11 am and not earlier? I have a feeling he might call me and tell me to come in earlier. Has that happened to anyone?
Re: Scheduled C-Section
Scheduled is definitely different than emergency- I've had both and my recovery the first time was awful and with the repeat c/s it was a lot quicker and easier (for me)
The thing that sucks about having surgery at 11 is not having anything to eat before. My 2nd was early in the morning.
As far as what to bring, just the basics. Loose going home clothes that don't go across your c/s area, stuff for baby (clothes, burp rag, car seat
My 1st was an unplanned c/s after 18 hours of active labor. My 2nd was a scheduled c/s.
The schedules c/s was a far better experience than the unplanned. The unplanned c/s was rushed and chaotic and I was exhausted from being up and in labor for so long. I also had a severe back pain and they were having difficulty managing my pain with meds and I couldn't lay flat on my back because of the pain so they were talking about having to put me under anestesia. I was finally able to get comfortable enough to lay still (although I was still in a lot of pain) so they could do the c/s without having to put me to sleep. After the baby was born, I saw him for a minute before he was taken away (DH went with) for all his testing, etc. After I was stitched up I was wheeled into recovery and I was so drugged up I had trouble processing everything that happened and just felt really loopy. It was a total of 3 hours before I got to really see my DS or hold him.
With a scheduled c/s everything is really easy and calm and just a completely different experience. I was more alert and I felt more rested and energized (because I hadn't been in labor for several hours prior), I wasn't drugged up (just a spinal) and I was able to really process what was happing and be more "present" for the birth. I remember laughing and talking with DH, the nurses, and doctors while they were performing the c/s. I got to really see my DD afterwards and DH and DD stayed with me the whole time while they pieced me together. They did DD's exam's in the room with me. DH and DD got to go to the recovery room with me. I got to hold DD as soon as they were done stitching me up. It was a great experience.
I'm not sure why your Dr. is unsure of the scheduling. My c/s was scheduled for noon. I had to check in a few hours prior to be prepped.
I know it's hard but try not to worry too much about it. I was really afraid of my scheduled c/s because of the horrible experience I had with my 1st and afterwards I wished I wouldn't have stressed out about it so much.
