tell me your secrets.
I feel like I've been sick since October. A couple stomach viruses, six colds, a double ear infection, bronchitis. Lately, I'm feeling like I'm not even getting over something before I come down with something else. I'm exhausted, forgetting to pay bills, doing the bare minimum with my kid (he's changed and fed and sometimes bathed), and today I cried because I can't even remember what it's like to feel halfway decent.
I get plenty of sleep. I wash my hands. I eat fruits and vegetables. I take a multivitamin. I don't work out but we are quite active.
What else can I do?
Re: If you never or rarely get sick
Before I had my kid, I was sick with a minor cold 2 or 3 times a year - and I worked in healthcare. I went years between stomach viruses.
A doesn't go to daycare but we are very social. He has only had 3 colds in his life but I suppose he is just passing crap to me without getting sick himself. I'm starting to wonder if there is something wrong with my immune system, though.
I'm in my eighth year of teaching... I'm about immune to everything now.
I was sick a ton as a child. That is my secret, ha ha.
Seriously though, it seems like my kids are sick all the time. Thankfully, DH and I stay healthy. I'm hoping that all of their sickness now leads to a strong immune system later on.
Teaching is my secret. After 9 years in the classroom, I could walk through the plague and come out the other side. Children bring everything to school, and I suffered during my first two years.
I also don't sanitize everything, I think that can actually lead to more illness. I read an article once about how constantly sanitizing everything prevents the body from building up immunities to everyday germs. As a result, when we come in contact with germs, our body is less able to fight them off because it is not familiar with them. It wasn't in any sort of scientific journal or anything, but it kind of makes sense to me.
I suppose I have good genes or I'm a carrier and get other people sick. My dd is in school, my son is in daycare, they've both been sick but like me, are rarely sick so I don't even pick up germs from them. I wish I could tell you what I do, but I don't actively do anything to prevent illness. Maybe it's because I'm not a germaphobe and have a strong immune system?
Sorry you're having a rough time. I hope you're healthy soon!

Sounds like you're doing everything right - handwashing (every time you come in the house and before eating - not hand sanitizing), lots of sleep, exercise, good nutrition.
In addition, fish oil is amazing for immunity. I give DD one spoonful and myself three of Barleans Omega Swirl (you can get it at Whole Foods). It is organic and food-based, so more absorbable than the pills. It is in liquid form and tastes really yummy. I've been doing it for about a year and DD has been substantially less sick this winter compared to last.
I was going to suggest this as well.
I'm hardly ever sick, and neither is DD. I don't know why, really. I always joked that it was because I bit my nails my whole life so by doing that I immunized myself against everything cause I always had my hands in my mouth. (Think, hand holding the bar on the subway, then right in my mouth. Hand holding open a door, then right in my mouth.)
As parents with DD, we're not big on sanitizing stuff or using Purell. Sure, DD gets stuff that goes around daycare (so far only one round of pink eye and HFM in the year she's been there), but she's definitely less sick than other kids overall and again, I can't really say why.
DH has asthma so when he gets a cold, it lasts a long time, but he only gets a cold like twice a year.
I would talk to your doc about it. It's def not normal to be sick all the time.
