My OB swore by it, although maybe she was trying to appease me as I complained about not being able to enjoy happy hour with DH while pregnant. She said the malt would help it come in. I've read other places it is actually counter-productive. But, I had half a beer (we drink rather strong craft brews so I wanted to start slow) when DS was 48 hours old, and milk came in the next day and I've had a serious supply ever since!
I don't know, but a lot of ladies use brewer's yeast to up supply. I suppose drinking an unfiltered craft brew might be the best way to go if that's the variable helping.

Imported beer contains vitamin B12, some say that is what it is...I just took a sublingual B complex with B12, because I was told that mothers who consumed even small amounts of alcohol produced less milk in subsequent feedings. Also you can buy brewers yeast and put it in all your food.
Re: is beer an old wives tale?
