Let's Talk About Kristin

While throwing around names last night, DH suggested Kristin. I've liked the name for a while but always assumed it was a no-go because it's the name of his friend's wife.

I like that it's strong but still feminine (like DD's name). And I like that it's Scandanavian/German, since that's the largest chunk of our heritage. However, it feels very 90's to me (ranked #174 in 1996; last year, it was #880). I don't mind a name being a little dated if it's a good name. Is Kristin a good name? Or is it all dated?

I've always been a fan of Kirsten.  Similar, but doesn't seem to be quite as dated.

See, to me these names are very dated so I would put Kristin ahead of them. Quite possibly because I knew far fewer Kristin's than Heather's. There's nothing wrong with a slightly dated name IMO, she won't have a lot of peers with the same name.

  • I don't think it's dated. I like it.
  • It's only dated to our generation, it will be refreshing in hers.

Kristen isn't for me, but I do like it. It's not a bad name at all. I can't say it's dated.

It's also recognizable, spelled right and not super popular so it's a win in my book.

It's also better than the 567,000 ridiculously butchered K names out there now!

  • I think it's a good name.  And as a bonus it's not a name that is often used right now.  I'd use it if you love it!

I like Kirsten, too. I've just always had pronunciation issues with it. Is it KEER-sten or KIR-sten? I always felt like the first pronunciation is really screetchy and hard on the ears, but I like the other one.

  • I really like this name!  I don't put it in the same category as Jessica/Heather/etc.  Not sure why, but it feels much more classic and much less 90's.  I also like Kirsten!

That was our goal with Monica. And it would be the same situation with Kristin, to a greater extent, even (Monica is considerably more popular right now than Kristin is).

Christina is a nice name and I like it well enough, but it's just too flowery for my taste.

I do agree with you that it's more classic than Kristin, though.

My name is Kristen! :) Honestly, I've always had to correct spellings because most do it spelled Kristin. I never knew many other Kristen's growing up and the ones I did know were 5+ years older than me.

As for the Kirsten pronunciation, I've always heard t exactly as spelled. Kiersten or Keirsten is what I've always seen as KEER-STEN.

  • I think Kristen is nice, even if it's dated.  For another option, what about Krista/Christa?  It could be kind of dated too, but I think it still sounds a little fresh with the ends-in-a thing.

  • It's not a bad name, but I feel like I've regularly heard the name Kristin my entire life (same with Danielle, Heather, Kimberly, Nicole, etc.). It feels common and old-school boring to me.

    Yup, me too.

While I think Kristin is slightly dated, it is nowhere near as dated as most of those other 80s names.

I think it goes well with Monica. I don't know any Kristins under the age of 28...so it would be somewhat refreshing to hear.

  • Kristin/Kristen is nice.  Yes, a bit dated but not too overdone.  I know of a 5 year old with the name and then everyone else is my name (mid-late 20s....sob, that's the first time I've said it like that).

I really love Kirsten.  I always thought it was Keer-sten but then met one and she pronounced it as Kur-sten.  I grew up with a boy Kiersten and he pronounced it as Keer-sten.

Kirsten is pronounced Kur-sten. That's my cousin's name. We are Swedish ;)

    Kiersten is pronounced Keer-sten.

  • To me it screams 1970s baby.  I went to school with so.dang.many Kristins, Kristens, Kirstens, Kerstins, Kristas, Kristiannas, Khristinas, Christals that I would stay very far away from the Krist/Christ prefix for a long, long time.

If you want to honor Scandinavian heritage I'd use something more uncommon. :)

ETA: I just read the other responses and wanted to add something as a Heather.  I realize that Heather was much more popular than Kristin, (#3 the year I was born) but I was the only Heather in my HS class.  Meanwhile there were all of the above listed girls in the class with me (except Christal).  I think that there are so many variants of Krist-, plus the similarity to Kir-, that this name seems much more common to me than Heather, which had no variants.

  • Yes

Great, refreshing choice!  Does not seem dated to me at all as I never lumped it in with all the Jessicas and heathers I went to school with.  Those to me are dated.  There were a lot of Christines and Christinas (and a couple of Kristas) but only ONE Kristin in my entire school.

It stood out as an unusual name if you can believe it.  People were always telling her how lucky she was to not have been one of the 15 Christines in the school.  (I know all this because we were friends in HS!)

I say go for it - - very pretty name and thankfully not ridiculously popular at the moment.  YOur DD wont be like one of a million Lilys or Avas out there.

One beautiful toddler and one beautiful baby.

Yeah, I sort of agree with you. I like the name but don't love it. There are so many other names on our list I love more.

It's just one of DH's few suggestions. So I thought I'd see what BNB said.

  • Love it! Then again I don't typically mind dated names (I still love Mallory).

However, I prefer the spelling Kristen. Just seems prettier to me. I agree that Kirsten can be awkward and I have a feeling that people who quickly glance at the name will say Kristen anyway.

  • I'm a Kristen. I think the en ending is much less common than the in ending. I like my name but I was born in 1981 along with a lot of other Kristins apparently and I always had AT LEAST 2 others with the same name in my class which annoyed the crap out of me. I believe my HS psychology class had 6 of us in the same class. Oye! Seeing as how that would no longer be an issue, I'd say go for it! I am surprised that people think it is a 90's name because it's popularity started gaining momentum long before that.
