Success after IF

My RE is closing his practice/transferring our frozen embies :( (long)

I recently found out that my RE is closing his practice in Sept.  He's in practice for himself and apparently he had a back injury or back issues within the past year or so.  I don't know details but he stopped doing surgeries within the past year.  We haven't been there since early August when we were released to the OB.  Supposedly we are going to get a letter in the mail from him soon with the details.  I was told this by the secretary when I called to see about bringing DS for a visit.  :(

I am so sad and disappointed.  We were with him for over 2 years and this was the 2nd RE went saw.  While he didn't always have the best bedside manner and wasn't the warm and fuzzy type, he did work really hard to get us pg.  I respected him and feel like we have been through so much with him.  And he obviously helped us have our DS.  And we also have quite a few frozen embies(16) we want to use in the future.  Not all 16, but we want at least one more child, if not a total of 3.  And I wanted this RE to do our future FET(s).

So sad.  I am not sure about how to transfer our frozen embies.  But this letter they're sending out will give details.  There are 2 other RE practices in the area and we have already been to one of them.  We actually started out with the other RE but left to get a 2nd opinion.  I haven't heard great things about the 3rd RE practice and is further away.  But, like DH, the hard work is "done" so to speak.  A FET is pretty easy, IMO, as far as the monitoring stuff.  So maybe we would just go back to the old RE.  That would be kind of awkward. I  never had issues with my lining, so I trust any RE could monitor that for a FET.

Has anyone transported embies before?  Is there a way to check them to make sure they survived the transport or will they not know until they thaw them for a FET?

Re: My RE is closing his practice/transferring our frozen embies :( (long)

  • My RE died shortly after our kids were born and the practice closed. The office coordinated transferring all frozen embryos (or other specimens) to either another clinic or a cryobank for free. We chose to go with the bank since we were not planning on using them right away.

We received a letter letting us know that they arrived safely and we now pay an annual fee for storage. We are starting to think about doing an FET, which means finding a new RE, but we moved, so we would have had to anyway.

    Good luck with the process!

  • So sorry to hear this. The hard work is done but don't underestimate the importance of the embryologist - I would look at success rates - but a bank in the meantime may be your best bet.
  • Good to know! I think I remember you posting when your RE died.  That's really sad.

Guess I never thought about a cryobank. That's probably what we'll do since we probably won't do a FET for a year or more. Glad your embies did fine during the transport.  Good luck with finding a new RE and your FET!

  • After I posted this I did think that the embryologist still has a big role in the grading and handling of frozen embies.  Will have to check out success rates for FETs.  Thanks so much!
