Anyone starting to stock up on diapers?

Instead of buying a bunch of clothes and other things that I'll likely get at my shower, I've thought about buying a pack of diapers every other week or so.  That's something we'll need for sure!  Has anyone else done this before or is anyone doing it now?  How do/did you decide what sizes to buy, how much of each size, and what brands?

Re: Anyone starting to stock up on diapers?

  • With DD 1 I was given 2 diaper cakes plus people did diapers as gifts. Stocking up isn't a bad idea but its really hard to calculate how many you need. If you have a larger baby you won't need as many of the newborn sizes. (Hope that makes sense). Nothing wrong with buying a pack here or there though to help cut the cost later down the line!

With DD 2 we ended up cloth diapering and LOVE it so we will do the same with this one. GL!

  • We have not started stocking up yet with this baby.  However with DD we got some advice from a good friend to buy a box of diapers with every paycheck.  Different sizes of course and different brands b/c you never know what will work the best with the baby.  We would then tape the receipt to the box so that if we needed to take it back we could and get a bigger size.

DD was 8lbs 2ozs and she was in newborns for at least a month.  We didn't buy as many of those b/c we weren't sure but we did buy plenty of 1's and 2's.

We found that Huggies worked the best for DD.  Hopefully it will hold true for this one too!

  • Definitely not.  Maybe once I hit my v-date I will start stocking up from things but my greatest fear is to get ahead of myself, end up MCing again and be surrounded by baby stuff.

  • I would just set the money aside rather than purchasing. DS came home in Size 1 diapers. Huggies and Luvs have never worked for us, so we used Pampers for a bit. When I stepped back and realized we were spending nearly $100 a month on pampers, we switched to cloth. I just got rid of a ton of diapers because we had way too many...Oops. Now I need to buy some more since we will have 2 in diapers for a greater period of time...

  • I haven't yet but I have a DS still in diapers so the thought of buying for two doesn't sit with me well right now. I'm hoping that DS will be potty trained or at least very close to it by Nov. I will probably start buying though near the end of the summer just to get started.

As for sizes/brands - we've only used Pampers, I love them. I usually buy on Amazonmom with subscribe and save. I really like the convenience of them being delivered to my door and in such a large quantity. DS was only 7lbs when he was born so he was in nb for awhile (can't recall how long) and now he's JUST getting into size 4 and he's 25months old. Don't go crazy with the nb size, if you have a bigger baby you won't need that many. I would get size 1 or 2 if you want to stock up.

  • I am going to do that. I have my first apt on 4/17 so once all goes well from there, I will be buying diapers every week....or every other..I did that with my son and it is beyond helpful, mostly you always have diapers when you need it without having to rush out to Costco or the store...=)

  • If everything goes well at my next ultrasound in a couple weeks I will start buying diapers every now and then.

  • I would say if you're going to do this keep your recipts because different diapers work out better on different babies.  We were gifted pampers, luvs and huggies and only the pampers worked for us because the others gave him rashes and/or irritation.  I think you'd almost be better off just saving the money aside and buying what work at the time you need them.

  • This is thinking way too far ahead for me, so no.  Partly superstition, and partly storage space will prevent me from dealing with diapers until much closer to my due date.  Plus, i think we might try cloth...

I use cloth diapers.  How ever my SIL just had a baby shower and they had people bring in a pack of diapers for a chance to win a prize.  She got a ton of differentsizes.

  • I have been buying diapers and wipes.  I'm buying different sizes as well.  I believe that Walmart accepts exchanges for diapers (even if you didn't buy them there and have no receipt) as long as they carry the brand.  I'm buying at least 1 box of diapers or 1 box of wipes every month.
  • Once I get my US on May 1st and everything is well, I'm definitely going to start buying Diapers!  We are going to go through a ton of them and it's better to have them on hand!  :-)  I know you can by "Cases" from the diapers.com

  • no. DD#1 didn't do well with a particular diaper last time and we had to switch. our friends daughter is allergic to several different kinds. you don't want to spend hundreds on something you could possibly not even use. i'd probably save the money for the diapers instead. buy giftcards or something specifically meant for diapers.

  • DH and I decided to start buying a pack every time we go grocery shopping. That's every two weeks (so every paycheck). We bought our fist pack yesterday. Good feeling :)

  • I agree with most on here, if you are going to do it, keep the receipt, then if they do not work, you can exchange them.

I am planning on stocking up on cloth diapers, I really want to try them, and my DH is somewhat on board, so I only have just over 7 months to convince him, haha!
