Re: Weekly BLW check-in

  • DD had asparagus and green beans and liked both. I don't think she "ate" much of it, but she liked chewing on them. I think I might steam some carrot spears later today.
  • Loading the player...
  • Hits: LBB is certainly a carnivore - Passover chopped liver, gefilte fish, and Easter lamb were the big winners this week.

Misses: sweet potatoes were not as popular.

Highlights/Concerns/Anything you want to share: Has anyone else found that since starting BLW their kids are more "interested" in breastfeeding?  LBB has taken to unlatching and examining my nipple while eating- both looking at it and exploring with his fingers, before relatching.

  • We are starting in about 2 more weeks. So excited. Also, blu-eyed I don't know about subjecting your poor child to gefilte fish. Might have to call CPS on that one Wink (totally kidding in case you didn't realize ha ha).

  • We started on Thursday!

Hits: Bread, Avocado, beef (I did the stir-fried beef and broccoli from the BLW cook book. She sucked on the meat quite a bit)

Misses: The banana made her cry. She got really frustrated with oatmeal because she couldnt get it in her mouth.

Concerns: Gassy burps, a bit of spit up which is unusual for her.

Things to share: There was avocado in her poop! I was so surprised that she got some down. I thought she just sucked and spit it out.

    The coughing/heaving is freaking scarey.

  • We are starting two weeks from this Friday or Saturay.  I am excited to start giving her food, but it's just another one of those milestones that makes me a little sniffly because it means she's getting more independent and grown up.  We have such a nice BFing relationship and I know that starting solids will start the process of her eventually weaning.  Sob.  But, it will be fun to watch her explore food.

I have been putting her in her high chair at the table and giving her empty baby spoons and her little banana toothbrush to practice picking things up and putting them in her mouth.  She sat there forever yesterday while I was cooking.  We ordered a new table for our sunroom and it will be great when we can all eat in there as a family.

  • I have still only given banana, avocado and Baby Mum Mums up to this point, since DD just turns 6 months today and I am just finishing up the BLW book (thanks again Mack!)

I am planning to give some cucumber and green beans this week, and maybe some leftover Easter lamb today for her "birthday."

Man, this kid LOVES to eat though.  She gobbles that food right up, and cries when it is gone!

  • Hits: Butternut squash, water in her sippy cup

Misses:  broccoli (I think it was the texture of the floret part, that beady feeling)

Concerns:  She cried while she pooped the other day. This is very abnormal for us, and it was really said to watch her cry and grunt to get the poop out. Also, lots of really stinky toots here!

  • Mack: Are you the one with the BLW book? I would love to see a copy. We're doing purees but also giving H some of our food and I want to make sure I'm not screwing him up for life... yet. Wink

  • Hits:  Mum-Mums are still his favorite; cucumber, sweet potato "fries" (cut into strips and baked), banana (except it gets slippery fast, which frustrates him)

Misses:  broccoli, but he'll eat it with a spoon if I mash it up

Concerns:  I've been doing BLW and puree combo, but the more actual food I give him, the less he wants to eat the purees.  I have no problem going BLW all the way, but it freaks my in-laws out.  Since they watch him while I'm at work, they need to be comfortable with my choice in feeding.  At Easter, my FIL picked up some food from the high chair and put it in Ronin's mouth.  I explained that he is supposed to feed himelf, and both my FIL and MIL are like "he's way too young for that."  So it's purees during the day and BLW for dinner with me after work.

I totally agree with you on the gefilte fish.  I won't touch that stuff with a 10-foot pole.  But I'm trying to expose him to things I don't like outside the house so I don't have to make them/have them in mine!

And DH loooooves gefilte fish.  That and his adoration of lox are probably the main reasons he was okay with marrying a Jew.

  • Also I'm doing a combo of pur?e and BLW.

I don't think he's actually ingested much yet. He didn't like rice cereal but opened wide for oatmeal.

Chunks of avocado made him projectile vomit milk (I posted this in the hates solid food thread too) - maybe because he's trying to swallow but hasn't figured it out yet? He did the same thing with green bean pur?e this morning.

He loves chewing on green beans and sticks of pear.

We are starting soon too!  She tried to take a bite of my sandwich the other day so I think she's definitely getting ready. Wink

I just bought the BLW weaning cookbook so I can go grocery shopping and plan out our meals for the week.  I'm thinking about starting with lunch since I SAH and my hubby comes home for lunch.  She's usually in a better mood.

Ha ha, well at least lox are delicious.

Seriously some people love that stuff. I know someone who chugs the gel! So gross.

    Ugh Ick!

    I do love lox though.

DH used to be Orthodox, and he always says "real" gefilte fish is much better than the jarred stuff.  He loves the real thing.  I've never had it, so I have no basis for comparison.

Interesting. My mom asked if I knew anything about making it from scratch - but I tend to stay away from most things with fins,

  • Sorry about resurrecting a dead post but FUN!! I have been MIA, we are selling our house and it has been crazy... But we started BLW a week or so ago. It's going really well, except when he bites off a chunk and my wife freaks out.

So far he has had: apples, pears, banana, mango, chicken, mum mums (or whatever they are called), pickles (loves them!), cucumber, green beans, celery, carrots, ... I think that's all.

I am also giving him organic pur?es (for protein and vit) He loves Ella's rutabaga mix.

I just got the new edition of the BLW cookbook. It came out last week, I think. I can't wait to try more complex foods. He LOVES eating and feeding himself.
