Re: Remind me how it wrks regarding Jackets and car seats..
The weather has been pretty nice lately so I hope you won't have to worry about it for a while anyway. But nothing thicker than a fleece for a jacket with a car seat is the general rule.
I usually by the 2 in 1 jackets for the winter. I use the inner layer while in the car and throw the outer layer on after we get out if it is really cold.
After 7 years trying to concieve, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs, my third IVF was a success!
My Christmas baby turned into a turkey bird! Dillon Richard was born at 34 weeks, 5 days on November 28, 2009 after 10 weeks on bedrest for preeclampsia.

I think the rule is nothing thicker than a sweatshirt/fleece but the reality of what moms do depends on where you live.
We live in Wisconsin, it gets really cold in the winter - DS (now 3) wears a down jacket while riding in his carseat and I make sure the straps are compressing the jacket as best I can. Some mornings (when he was 2) he has to be wrestled into his jacket - I'm not going to do that standing in the cold or standing in a parking lot at the store. And I worry about the "what if" that is more likely to happen -- if the car breaks down or goes into a snow drift I'd want him to be wearing a coat so that he doesn't freeze.
For baby I use a fleece carseat cover that fits like a shower cap, I prefer to not use the ones that go under baby between baby and the carseat. As it gets a little warmer I just cover baby with a blanket.
