Does your LO have a bad habit?

Cal has a bad habit of picking at his feet.  Gross, I know, and I'm embarrassed to admit he got it from me (and I got it from my dad).  I'm always picking at my calluses in the summertime and my toes, etc.  I wish that's all he did, but somehow he has taken to peeling skin on the bottoms of his big toes.  His skin, through normal wear & tear, begins to peel in that location on its own (mine does too).  And he actually peels it away - ewww, I'm so sorry, but I wanted to be specific here!  And it's NOT dead skin like a callus is, so this has GOT to be painful.  I can't even imagine doing it.  We've been trying to get him to stop, to no avail.  I guess we're going to have to enforce him wearing shoes in the house (normally we insist he take them off), because if we don't he takes off his socks and mindlessly picks at his feet when he's just sitting around.

Any ideas on how to stop a bad habit?

Re: Does your LO have a bad habit?

  • Nose picking (does that even count at this age) and some nail biting although he seems to be doing that less!

I, however, am a foot picker too.  SUCH a gross habit.  But so satisfying in a gross, creepy way.  LOL!

As far as Cal's issue - I would suggest aquaphor on his dry spots - and socks/shoes in the house - to keep his hands away so he can't hurt himself by picking at raw spots (ouch!)

    Wheee!

  • Penny just started biting the skin around her thumb nails.  I am a nail biter (although I have gotten wayyy better in the last few years).

And of course she picks her nose.

Reed used to put his hands in his mouth when he was watching TV or tired.

Maybe get him some special super-cool slippers to wear around the house so you aren't confusing the no shoes in the house rule.  It will be hard to get him to wear socks when the weather is nice too.

  • Ugh. I wish I had advice. I have a nose picker!
  • Claire picks at her cuticles, so does her sister.

  • Conor bites his nails.  I think this is part nervous habit and part he hates having his nails cut.  So he bites them.  Plus side, I never have to cut his finger nails.  Bad side, he bites them so far down the bleed and hurt at time.

He also picks his nose and eats it some times. Ick! Trust me, I have tried to curtail this habit.  He thinks it's funny.  I think because of the look of disgust on my face.  Boys are gross!

This is my DS, too.  DS also picks at his pointer finger.  I have no idea how it started, and why only that finger, but he will pick at it so much it bleeds.

  • Nose picker (and chronic nose bleeder which is a vicious cycle) here.  P also has this strong desire to cut his nails.  We find him at night hiding with nail clippers and cutting away at his nails.  I guess not a bad habit per se but like a weird desire that he does all of the time!

LOL, DH told me he used to eat his boogers until a classmate told him he was eating his own brains. He hasn't touched a boogie since;)
