Preeclampsia and heparin and/or baby aspirin?

I have had pre e twice and I was talking with my  ob today about a possible #3 and he talked about adding heparin and or baby aspirin to my regime depending on te test results. Has anybody had any luck with thOse medications helping to prevent an early delivery from peer?

Re: Preeclampsia and heparin and/or baby aspirin?

  • I was on baby aspirin every day of my pregnancy except between weeks 12 and 13, in the hopes that it would prevent pre-e, but it didn't. However, I believe it may have prevented my son getting IUGR (his growth did seem to halt his last week in the womb, but I blame crappy chemical-infested hospital food for that -- I was on hospital bed rest for 10 days before delivering -- prior to that I had eaten a protein-rich whole foods diet).

We want to TTC again in a year or so, and I do plan on taking baby aspirin again, but this time I also want to get back to a normal BMI (I'm 30-40 pounds overweight which I think probably contributed to my pre-e).

If you have any type of clotting disorder, heparin/lovenox would certainly help. Not sure it would help if you don't have a clotting disorder.

  • If you go to preeclampsia.org and search their message boards, there are lots of ladies on there that claim Lovenox and/or baby aspirin helped a lot. PP is right though, if you don't have a clotting disorder then it probably wouldn't help much. Talk to a high risk OB and see what their thoughts are. Maybe they can do a panel of blood work and look into it further. (That's what I plan to do when/if we are ready to TTC again) Good luck!

  • I was on Lovenox, Baby Aspirin, and then Heparin (switched from Lovenox before delivery) due to 2 clotting disorders, but still delievered at 33 weeks due to severe pre-E.  That being said, maybe these drugs held off delivery for me without me knowing it?  I've never heard of taking these drugs for this reason before, but I would trust your doctor - if he/she thinks it might help, then I would go for it.  I've been on Lovenox and BA for 2 entire pregnancies without any issues (my first DD was delivered at 40w3d).  Good luck!

  • When my LO was diagnosed with IUGR and low AFI at 28 weeks, the MFM mentioned a baby aspirin routine.  He decided that, at 28 weeks, it was probably too late to be beneficial though.  However, if I decided to have another child, I plan on pursuing this.  I do not have any clotting disorders, etc but he said that studies have shown baby aspirin can improve blood flow and reduce the chances of developing pre-e.

  • I second the preeclampsia.org recommendation, but just a heads-up that there are some members who are adamant that nothing will help prevent pre-e and they will tell you not to take baby aspirin or change yor diet/lifestyle in any way.

I understand where they're coming from, because they want to base their opinions on peer-reviewed studies, but I personally believe that certain things can't hurt and might possibly help (baby aspirin, healthy whole foods diet with protein-rich foods, etc.). When I've said exactly that, they argue that those things could hurt.

  • I have a clotting disorder and took lovenox and aspirin with both of my pregnancies. First pg, no issues whatsover, not even a high bp reading. 2nd pg I delivered at 24 weeks due to HELLP (it's like pre-e on crack).
