My preemie is now 1 year old! She is only saying dada and sometimes mama and she says these only when she babbles so im convinced she doesnt actually know what shes saying. Is this okay or should i be concerned?
It's not uncommon for preemies to have a speech delay. DD had one and fortunately qualified for speech therapy, which she got twice a month. Do you see a neonatologist for developmental check-ups? if so, you can mention it to them.
One thing that was suggested for us that helped a lot was to get Signing Time videos from the library. I'm not much into letting kids watch TV, but the early Signing Times helped her learn to communicate while she was learning to talk.
No she only sees her regular pediatrician but ill mention it to him. I have all the baby einstein videos and I read to her and do all those things to help her and still nothing seems to be working.
Annie has a speech delay. She has a couple of words, but it literally took me several days to figure out what she was trying to say. We were already seeing EI and she qualified for another year of service for some other things, but we'll work on her speech too. Often times you can't get speech therapy until the kid is 2, but its worth a conversation with your pedi about it
Depending on the state, preemies may qualify for additional therapy before they're two. If the doctor doesn't know, the social worker at the hospital where she was born may know.
I don't know much about Baby Einstein videos, but Signing Time is really helpful. They do simple signs, and if you reinforce it, she can learn to use the signs to communicate while she's learning.
Our EI said 3 words by 16m and 1 word (other than mama and dadda) between 12-14m. LO is 13 (almost 14m) and is still just babbling. He does a lot of sounds... just nothing for an object yet. But... he is only 11m adj, so they aren't worried yet. They did his NICU follow up eval and he scored at 10m for expressive language and he had just turned 11m the day before. So a slight delay, but nothing to get nervous about yet!
My son has been in speech therapy for a long time, I don't think I'd be concerned yet. He had 1 word and 2 babble sounds at 18 mo when we got the eval.
I wouldn't be too concerned at this point. My DD has one consonant sound and no words at 13 months and we just started therapy. It sounds like your LO is doing well!

My pedi said that 1 year olds should have 3 words, but my boys only have 2. She's not concerned since they aren't 1 year adjusted yet.
Our EI case manager gave me these handouts when I started worrying about speech. After reading them, I'm not too concerned:
