UTIs and heating pads...

This is the second UTI I've had in two weeks, absolutely horrible! My doctor told me that it may just be due to my particular anatomy and that I'm just one of the unlucky ones. I took macrobid last time; she put me on a different antibiotic this time, and they're doing a culture to see what exactly is aggravating my bladder. She also said that depending, she may put me on a prescription for the rest of my pregnancy so that this won't keep happening and/or it won't develop into a kidney infection. I told her that if it was between taking a pill every day and having a UTI, I'd gladly take the pill.

Has anyone else been extremely prone to UTIs during pregnancy, and if so, did you have to take this pill my doctor was referring to?

Also, with this UTI, I'm experiencing some back pain. Is it okay to use a heating pad? Or is there maybe a time limit that I should stick to if I do use one?

Thanks!

Re: UTIs and heating pads...

  • I haven't had UTIs during pregnancy but I did have a spell a few years ago with recurrent UTIs. I went on a low dose antibiotic daily for six months and it helped greatly. I'm sure that's the same thing your doctor is referring to.

I would probably stay away from the heating pad. If you're talking about the electric kind, they aren't designed to be laid on top of and you'll not likely be comfortable laying on your stomach with the pad on your back. Have you tried tylenol for the pain?

  • Not yet. My last one, Tylenol did nothing really for the pain, but the first dose of macrobid gave me instant relief! I just took my first dose tonight, so we'll see, but the way I feel now, I probably won't be going to bed without taking Tylenol!

  • I've had a uti with this pregnancy but the doc said its most likely because I'm not drinking enough water, I guess it was the problem because I started drinking more water and haven't had another one as of today .

  • I don't have any experience with the UTi's but I do with the heating pads! I pulled one of the round ligaments teaching my gymnastics class 2 weeks ago and my OB told me to keep a heating pad on it. i have one that you warm in microwave and it stays warm for about an hour. She said to use it as often as possible as well as soak in my hot tub (with the temp turned down of course). I would steer clear of the electric heating pads.
