Health Insurance...YIKES!

Just got off the phone with my insurance company...

My benefit year runs from Sept. 1 - Aug. 31. I had spoken with HR downstairs, which was confident that 'pre-existing' conditions (such as pregnancy) did not start over new deductibles and OOPs.

WRONG! Crying

Looks like we'll have maxed out our $750 deductible and come close to max OOP at $3000...only to turn around and get to pay next year's $600 deductible and $4000 OOP about 10 days into the benefit year.

The cost of this baby just doubled. Oh, my...

  • Ugh--that timing really stinks! I'm about to have to switch insurance and I'll have to start my deductible over, but it won't be as bad as what you're facing.

  • I am not sure where you live or where you work. However, here in Illinois there is a Maternity Medical Card. You can apply and may get it even if you have a good job with insurance. I work for the Government and make decent money and have rather good insurance and I was approved for the maternity card. Its worth a shot to try and see if where you live has something like that.

Thanks! I haven't heard of such a thing. I will certainly be looking into it!

  • Some insurance has a 30 day "grace period" for the same condition. Meaning any condition 30 days into the next insurance year that you had paid for the year prior was still covered under the old deductible/OOP. In that case you'd get until the end up Sept rather than the end of Aug.

Or maybe you'll go 11 days early? lol

But either way, I'll feel your pain, our insurance runs with the calander year and DD was due 2/1 so we also paid twice. The good part was we didn't pay for a thing the rest of the year!

  • I feel ya... our insurance runs with the calendar year (thank GOD!) but our coverage sucks... 5k deductible and 10k out of pocket max.  This is going to be one $$$$$ baby!!

  • That really sucks. I'm so happy our insurance covers 100%. The baby will be so worth it though.
  • I am sorry. That really sucks. I just found out that at the beginning of the year our benefits changed and we now have a $7k out of pocket max and not $6k. I hope you can find a way to only have to pay it once.
