Pregnant after IF

Insurance and NT scan?

Was yours covered? I have great insurance (though no fertility coverage), but any labwork, test etc that is requested by a dr is usually covered. Just talked to my MFM office that I was referred to. She said the bloodwork and NT scan are not covered.

Is this normal? Is it considered an "extra" thing? Might make my decision for me, unfortunately...

Re: Insurance and NT scan?

  • Wow! I never even considered that it wouldn't be covered. Is it something the doctor can argue for coverage?

I'm a little bit worried, because I already had the 1st tri b/w drawn. Never even crossed my mind that it wouldn't be covered!. I guess I'll find out...

  • My insurance covered it, but there was an extra 10 dollar charge because it was considered "specialty."

  • The language in my insurance is very loose and covers anything medically necessary for prenatal wellness. This includes the nt scan and all bloodwork, at 100%. I have a PPO, so things that are not "preventative" would otherwise cost me 20%. I think you should see what your policy says or call them to be sure.

  • Mine is not until next week; but I did a google search on my ins plan and the 1st tri screen IS covered.

However, I noticed that my ins does not cover the new MaterniT21 test.  If our 1st tri screen results come back high risk, we may opt for OOP MaterniT21 instead of CVS/Amnio (the latter 2 are covered).

  • I know that here in CA the NT scan and bloodwork are done through the State of CA. It's pretty annoying. I just got a bill for it in the mail for $165.00. I filled out the paperwork and sent back my insurance info. So we shall see what they say.

You may want to call your insurance company directly and check for yourself.

  • Mine was fully-covered, but I'm also AMA.  Find out how much it costs, because I think it was only a couple hundred.  Also, talk directly to your insurance company and ask them why it's not covered.

  • My MFM's office said that some insurance covers it and some doesn't.  They gave me the codes for all the tests and suggested that I call my insurance company and ask.  I did and luckily it was all covered for me.  I was really shocked when the dr office said it might not be.
