Whole Milk - anyone given this yet?

Hi,

I know we are supposed to wait until 1 year to try this but DD has refused formula and breastfeeding is no longer consistent. She is 9 mths.

So I have been wondering if anyone started on regular milk yet and what the effects are?

TIA!

  • I sincerely hope you speak to your pedi about this.  I'd also try different brands of formula.  I hear the Parent's Choice brand from Walmart is good.  Less strong flavored than other brands.

  • I agree with checking with Pedi first and I would not give my DD milk until 1 year.  That said, my mother gave myself and my 3 other siblings whole milk starting at 9 months because that was when we naturally weaned as well.  We are healthy and strong, however as my mother even admits, there were no guidelines back then about when to start giving cows milk like there is now.  We have them now for a reason.

I honestly would try other brands of formula like Katie4253 recommended.  I found that my DD did not like "regular" formula and would only drink the "sensitive" type, even though I am 98% sure she does not have a lactose intolerance. I highly recommend Target brand formulas.

Also, if you have not already tried it, you could also try toddler formula.  It is for 9m+ months to 24 months.

  • I agree with PPs- definitely call your pedi. I am pretty lenient about food in general, but this is one thing that I think is pretty important. My DD also prefers the sensitive formula for some reason. We do Sam's club brand, and she really likes it. I would probably try some other brands, and call your doctor. He/she may have a good recommendation as well.
  • I would also ask your pedi and I say that about very little.

It seems weird to me that a nine month old doesn't want anything to do with formula.

I have the most lax pedi ever in the food deptartment and he's pretty adamant about not weaing until a year.

My LO has had sips of milk out of Hs glass. It's just for fun though and a sip here and there. If your kid doesn't have a dairy allergy it's not going to cause harm, but at this age from a nutritent standpoint I wouldn't consider it a formula replacement.

  • I agree about contacting your pedi! Also, the pediatrician's office may have a samples of different brands and types of formula that they can give you to try out and see if one is a better match for your baby. I haven't done tons of research but I I would want my kiddo to have the benefits of BM or formula for at least a few more months and put off cow's milk until this summer.

  • No. And milk shouldn't be replacing breastmilk or formula even if you do introduce it early.

  • We just had DS 9 month check up yesterday and she told us to start weaning him off formula. Their theory/opinion is no formula after 1 year. She told me we could either do it cold turkey at 1 year, or start the weaning process now. I plan to start weaning soon.

I know all pedis are different, but that's just what ours said!

  • My mom admitted she gave him milk the other day. Non fat milk... Sigh...
