Advice for loss of pet?

If you experienced a loss of a family pet, how did you handle it with your LO?  Our dog is old and not doing too well and I have no idea what to tell our soon to be 3 year old if our dog passes.  I know she'll ask where is he?  I thought I should be prepared just in case.

    The kid's book dog heaven was great for our then - 2 y/o (it helped me too actually, haha).

    We lost our doggie who was 10 years old at the time of passing last July. DS asked where she was after he didnt see her for a day or so and I just told him that she went to doggie heaven and was happy now running with other doggies.

    He still asks for her every once in a while and I just tell him the same thing.  He seems to be ok with this explanation.

    We put our dog down last winter when the kids were just shy of 3 and 5.  It was hard but we told them that he had been in pain and now he has gone to heaven and he is watching over us and that he is no longer in pain.  WE kept it pretty simple and to the point and didn't go into a lot of details.  We answer questions (still get them as they get older and still talk about their dog) as best we can.  We made a photo book of pictures of his life with all of us and they look at it a lot.  We got a new puppy 8 months later and they love him and it has helped but we still talk about our other dog.  I am sorry - it is not easy.

    Well, we haven't had a pet pass yet....but we did have 2 foster dogs that found new homes.

    Ds didn't really notice with the 1st one since we only had him for 3 weeks.  But, we had the 2nd dog for 7 months.  Ds would constantly ask where she was and would get two bones out (one for our dog and one for her).

    We kept reminding him that she had found a new home and was living with her new family.  He still occassionally asks about her (it's been over a year).

    ~after 34 cycles we finally got our 2nd little bundle of joy~
