Motion sickness in infants/young toddlers

After our 4th instance of motion sickness within the past 2 weeks with my 1-year-old (she's 14 months), I can't deny that she clearly gets sick in the car and on boats.  Has anyone had this happen with their LOs at a young age?  If so, what have you done to try and help it in the car?  My daughter threw up 45 minutes into our 4 hour drive this morning so after we cleaned her and her car seat, we turned the seat FFing for the rest of drive.  While not ideal, we were at a loss and we needed to complete the drive.  She did do much better FFing which was good but, obviously, I would like to keep her RFing.  Any ideas or tips?

Re: Motion sickness in infants/young toddlers

  • My friend had this problem with her son.  Her pediatrician actually had them turn him forward facing before a year because every time he got in the car (even for a few minutes) he vomited.  I don't live near her and never witnessed how bad it was, but I assume it was bad if a doctor actually had them turn their child early (her husband is also a doctor and agreed to this plan).  From what she has told me, turning him forward facing helped a lot.  He still gets sick sometimes, but he doesn't get sick every time they are in the car.

I'm not sure what other things you can do while keeping her RFing.  Possibly crack the windows?  I know that makes me feel better sometimes.  My son is still RFing and loves it if we roll the windows down a bit.

It took 3 1/2 long years, but we finally got our little miracle!

  • If the RFing seat is still at a 45 degree angle and your manual says (or you can call the company to check) that you can make the seat more upright (35 degrees), that can help a lot with older kids (once they can support their head and it doesn't flop down and risk their airway).  Or change from the outboard seat into the middle or vice versa.  Some people swear by the sea bands, and you can try to keep it cooler in the back seat.
